Extra food, wine and loud merrymaking was in evidence. Halls were decked out with boughs of laurel and green trees, candles and lamps. An exchange of gifts was done. Valentine's Day History
The history of Valentine’s Day from the History Channel is seen here. A day in mid-February was celebrated by the Ancient Romans for either their god of fertility or the she-wolf of Rome. The ceremony began with a sacrifice and then the slapping of young women with strips of the animals skin and blood to bestow fertility for the coming year.
