Hockey Night in Canada is the longest running television in North American history. It began as a radio-only program in 1923, and launched on the Canadian Broadcasting Company in 1952. Airing every Saturday night from coast-to-coast in Canada, it features a doubleheader of National Hockey League action, and has served as the main host for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Canada. Thanks to the NHL Center Ice Package, many United States residents can view Hockey Night in Canada through the subscription-based package on cable or satellite television.
The Theme Song
Ask a group of Canadians to sing their national anthem, and very often you'll get two responses: one group singing Oh Canada, and the other humming or whistling the theme to Hockey Night in Canada. Known simply as The Hockey Theme, it was written in 1968 by Dolores Claman. The song is as much of an institution in Canada as the sport itself.
