HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus

  • HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus or human immune deficiency virus, a type of viral infection caused by a retrovirus. HIV is the autoimmune disease that causes AIDS. However, some people infected with HIV, never develop AIDS. HIV acts on the immune system, and makes the body more susceptible to infection and disease.

There is no cure for HIV. Currently, the symptoms of HIV can be controlled through a variety of drug therapies. Medications are also available to slow the progression of the disease. Researchers are working on a controversial AIDS vaccine. However, such a vaccination has not yet be approved anywhere in the world.

In 2008, researchers Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier won the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their work on HIV.
