History of the World: Part I

History of the World: Part I is a historical comedy directed by and starring Mel Brooks. The film presents the past in a chronological series of satirical scenes, spanning history, but also reaching into pre-history.

Key Scenes and Gags

  1. At Jesus' Last Supper (in which Brooks plays "the waiter"), the artist Leonardo sets up an easel and addresses Christ and the Apostles in a thick Italian accent—"Okay, you wanna be in the picture? Everybody go to the other side of the table. Come on."
  2. In a street scene in ancient Rome, a Roman with an Afro walks by with a ghetto blaster, playing the 1980 disco hit "Funky Town"
  3. The Spanish Inquisition is presented as a Broadway musical: "The Inquisition (What a show)/The Inquisition (Here we go)/We know you’re wishing that we’d go away..."
