- Over 300 ivory hip replacements were used from the 1960s to 1980s
- In 1962, a teflon acetabular component was replaced by high molecular weight polyethylene
- Ivory hip joint was also replaced by a metal (originally stainless steel) femoral component in the 1970's
- Acrylic bone cement is used to keep the device in place
- A total hip replacement is most commonly used to treat joint failure caused by osteoarthritis
- Other reasons for hip replacement: rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, traumatic arthritis and protrusio acetabuli for certain hip fractures
