Hilary Clinton was confirmed as Secretary of State on January 21, leaving a vacancy in her senate seat. Since Barack Obama named her as his choice for Secretary of State in December 2008, several prominent political players have emerged as rumored replacements to fill her seat in the senate.
New York Governor David Paterson appointed New York Representative Kirsten Gillibrand to the seat on January 23, 2009.
