A Hiatal Hernia is a type of hernia that occurs when a part of the stomach pushes through into the esophagus. The exact cause of a hiatal hernia is not known. However, there are a variety of factors that increases a persons risk, such as smoking, obesity, and being over the age of fifty.
In general, a hernia is defined as any portion of the body that protrudes into an area of the body that it does not belong. Most people with a hiatal hernia do not experience any symptoms. However, if a hiatal hernia becomes problematic, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms associated with a hazardous hiatal hernia include difficulty swallowing, an obstructed esophagus, and severe chest pain.
