Background

In 1918, a 22 year old salesman by the name of Walter L. Jacobs, started a car rental company with only 12 rental vehicles. The Chicago based company was successful and over a period of five years the amount of rental vehicles grew to 600. In 1923 Jacobs sold the company to John Hertz, the head of Yellow Cab and Yellow Truck. Jacobs stayed in the company as the chief operating officer and retired in 1960 when the Hertz fleet had grown to 15,500 trucks and 12,900 passenger cars.
