Henry VIII of England

  • Henry VIII of England, infamous for his six wives, broke with the Roman Catholic Church and essentially created the Anglican Church, with himself at its head.
  • Wives

    1. Catherine of Aragon, 1509-1533 (annulled)
    2. Anne Boleyn, 1533-1536 (beheaded)
    3. Jane Seymour, 1536-1537 (died of natural causes)
    4. Anne of Cleves, 1540 (annulled)
    5. Catherine Howard, 1540-1542 (beheaded)
    6. Catherine Parr, 1543 (outlived Henry)

  • Anne Boleyn

Historians believe Henry had an affair with Mary Boleyn, older sister to Anne Boleyn, at some point between 1519 and 1524. During that time, he may have fathered children with the elder Boleyn.

Anne at first resisted Henry's advances, but the monarch, unable to conceive a male heir with then-wife Catherine of Aragon, pursued her anyway. He would eventually dissolve the relationship between the Church of England and the Vatican after the Pope would not annul his marriage, thus allowing him to marry Boleyn.

With the approval of Parliament, Henry married Boleyn and she bore him a daughter and heir, Elizabeth I. After a few failed pregnancies, and with it appearing that she would likewise be unable to birth Henry a male heir, the King had Boleyn beheaded and married new mistress Jane Seymour.
