Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts. He was an author and a naturalist. He is most well known for his book Walden, which is his musings on living a simple life in natural surroundings.

Background
He was born to John Thoreau (a pencil maker) and Cynthia Dunbar. He was born David Henry Thoreau, but changed his name after college. He studied at Harvard University between 1833 and 1837. After graduating in 1837, he joined the faculty of Concord Academy, but was soon fired because he refused to mete out corporal punishment.Concord Academy: A Concord Chronology He later returned home to Concord where he met Ralph Waldo Emerson. He and Emerson became friends and Thoreau moved into the Emerson house in 1841. He tutored the Emersons' children and also worked as the family's handyman and gardener. In 1844, he returned to Concord to work in his father's pencil factory. -
Walden
Beginning in 1845, Thoreau lived on Walden Pond in a small cabin. Though his writing implies he as living in the wilderness, he was in fact, only 1.5 miles from his family home. During his time at Walden, Thoreau wrote about his daily activities and his musings on philosophy and nature.This writing was later published and became one Thoreau's most well renowned book; On Walden. -
Civil Disobedience
Another of his well known writings is "Civil Disobedience". This essay was first published in 1849. The premise of the book is that people should not allow the government to override their moral conscience, and the government is both often unjust.He assured people that the government was useful and could be changed. He was placed under arrest in 1846 for refusing to pay his poll tax in protest of the Mexican-American war.
