Swedish-born National Hockey League player Henrik Sedin plays center on the Vancouver Canucks' first line. His twin brother, Daniel Sedin, plays left wing, and throughout their lives, the brothers have played together as an effective offensive duo. Most often, Henrik Sedin is the play maker, passing the puck for brother Daniel Sedin to put in the net.
Born in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, the Sedin brothers come from a small town with a rich hockey history. Ornskoldsvik is the home of the Modo Hockey Club, any many of Sweden's most famous hockey plays have been born or played in they city, including Peter Forsberg, Markus Näslund, Niklas Sundström, Victor Hedman, and Thomas Gradin. Henrik grew up playing for Modo until he joined the Canucks in the NHL.
Henrik Sedin was drafted third overall in the First Round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Drafted exactly one spot behind his twin brother, then Canucks GM Brian Burke pulled off one of the most amazing draft days trades to secure the 2nd and 3rd picks, and allow the twins to keep playing together, as they had for their entire lives.
International Competition
Sedin has represented his home country of Sweden in numerous international competitions: The World Junior Championships in 1999 and 2001 and the World Championships the same years, at which Sweden took bronze both times. Sedin competed for Sweden at the World Championships again in 2005 and then won a gold medal along with Team Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics. He also played for Sweden in the 2010 Olympics, but they failed to medal.
2006/07 Season
During the 2006-2007 season, Henrik Sedin set a new Canucks franchise record for most assists in a season by assisting on 71 goals and as the Canucks' top scorer for the season, he received the Cyrus H. McLean Trophy. Finishing with 81 points, Henrik established a new career high in points, and solidified his position as the Canucks number one center.
2008/09 Season
The 2008-09 NHL season saw Henrik establish a new career high in points (82) and in goals, when he scored 22. It was a good year for Henrik, who tied his twin brother Daniel for the team lead in points. By finishing the season +22, Henrik also ensured that he would be seen as an all-around center, who was able to be responsible defensively, while consistently outscoring his opposition. The 2009 Post-Season was also a bit of a coming out party for Henrik, as for the first time in his career he was able to maintain his point-per-game pace and put up 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) in the Canucks' ten playoff games.
2009/10 Season
The 2009-2010 NHL season was a breakout season for Henrik Sedin. By setting career highs in goals with 29, and assists (83), Henrik emerged from a reliable point-per-game player into a legitimate NHL superstar. He finished the season in a neck-and-neck battle with flashy Russian superstar Alexander Ovechkin and All-Canadian Sidney Crosby, for the Art Ross Trophy for most points in a season. It was a battle that came down to the last game of the season. Trailing Ovechkn by one, Henrik and the Canucks played Calgary for their final game. Henrik threw the gauntlet down, and set up four goals, including a hat-trick by brother Daniel, to finish the season with 112 (a Canucks record). Ovechkin needed three points to tie (and win based on the tiebreaker of goals), but was unable to hit the scoresheet in Washington's last game.
- It's the first time a Canuck has won the Art Ross Trophy in the teams history.
Henrik Sedin's Hatrick
Henrik scored his first career hat-trick against the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, on route to his best season as a professional hockey player. The 2009-10 season saw Henrik establish a career high in both goals and assists.
