The Hellraiser movies are a series of horror films based on the novel by Clive Barker titled The Hellbound Heart. All of the films feature the now iconic character of “Pinhead,” a servant of hell unlocked by a twisted puzzle called The Lament Configuration.

Written, produced and directed by Clive Barker, the original Hellraiser film tells the story of Frank Cotton, a man who seeks pleasure beyond earthly means. Frank purchases a puzzle box called The Lament Configuration from a small shop. The puzzle at first proves difficult to solve or open in any way, but eventually relents. Once unlocked, the box unlocks the Cenobites, sadomasochist servants of hell who deal pleasure in the form of intense pain. They rip Frank to pieces. Years later, Larry Cotton (Andrew Robinson) moves into Frank's abandoned house with his wife Julia (Clare Higgins). When Larry cuts his hand on a nail, releasing blood onto the floorboards, Frank in partially resurrected. Frank reveals himself to Julia, and since the two had previously had an affair together, she assists him in finding victims for Frank to consume, so he can fully resurrect himself. However, Julia's stepdaughter Kirsty (Ashely Lawrence) has arranged to betray Frank to the Cenobites in order to save herself.
