Gameplay
Hellboy Science of Evil, in terms of its combat system, draws many parallels with other action-adventure games such as God of War, Beowulf, and Conan. Players can string together combos and perform devastating finishing moves on bosses via interactive cutscenes. Aside from Hellboy himself, players can also choose to play as fellow B.P.R.D. agents Abe Sapien or Liz Sherman. Each character will come equipped with his or her own unique talents and abilities to combat Hermann Von Klempt’s growing army. -

General Gameplay Tips
- There are two types of collectible items in Hellboy: Science of Evil: Lore and Artifacts. Lore cannot be missed in the game and is often awarded during cutscenes. Artifacts are hidden throughout the game and occasionally require items from later levels in order to retrieve them.
- In the top left corner of the screen, the Doom meter shows how much health is left and the amount of energy that has been collected for special attacks. The meter also houses small bubbles that increase throughout the game when unlocking artifacts & lore. These bubbles act as reservoirs for the energy meter.
- Hellboy's fire attack, Hellmode, uses up the energy from the meter. The attack mode can be started by clicking RS and LS at the same time. While in Hellmode, tap Y to pound the ground and create massive fire explosions to send enemies into a daze.
- Rather than using one button for interaction with objects, the game uses a combo instead. Hellboy will often need to use RT to grab objects and tap X to move them.
- Hellboy can jump and climb using the A button, attack with the X and Y buttons as well as grab enemies with RT.
- When Hellboy successfully grabs an enemy, he can throw the enemy with RT, slam the enemy with Y, punch the enemy by tapping X, headbutt the enemy by holding X, air-slam the enemy with A and Y and perform a finishing move with B.

The Samaritan
Hellboy: The Science of Evil #1 from GamesPress- The Samaritan uses a variety of ammo found throughout the game. Certain types of ammo have advantages over specific enemies. Here's a list of the ammo that becomes available as the game progresses:
- Heavy: Heavy ammo is the default and is found in heavy supply throughout the game. It's a one-shot solution for killing small creatures and temporarily slows down large creatures. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 40 rounds.
- Release: Release ammo is found in the first level and resupplies are marked with flower beds. It's a one-shot kill for the chain-swinging creatures and also releases the green glow from objects. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 7 rounds.
- Salt: Salt ammo is found in the first level and resupplies are in boxes similar to the Heavy ammo. It's used for freezing creatures in place. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 12 rounds.
- Firefly: Firefly ammo is found on the second level and resupply stations are marked with torches. It's great for pushing back mist enemies and lighting magical stones. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 7 rounds.
- Splinter: Splinter ammo is a shotgun blast of magical shrapnel and is found on the second level. It's great for crowd control of the small creatures. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 10 rounds.
- Grenade: Grenade ammo is found on the third level and resupply stations are identical to Heavy ammo stations. It can be used to send a crowd of enemies into a temporary daze and blow open doors. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 5 rounds.
- Charge: Charge ammo is taken when Hellboy performs a finishing move on a Nazi robot. It's excellent for slowing down large mini-bosses and electrifies the area with a small blast. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 3 rounds.
- Ignite: Ignite ammo is found on the fourth level and resupply stations are marked with red oozing stations. It sets enemies on fire and often sends them running away. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 7 rounds.
- Crystal: Crystal ammo is found on the fifth level and resupply stations are marked with orange banks of crystals. It kills undead, blue glowing enemies with one shot. Hellboy can carry a maximum of 7 rounds.

Characters
- Hellboy is the only character that's playable in single-player. Hellboy was summoned from the depth of Hell during World War II and adopted by a branch of the government that fights paranormal evil. Hellboy is equipped with the Right Hand of Doom (an invulnerable stone hand) and the Samaritan (an over-sized cannon that uses a variety of ammo). Hellboy is invulnerable to fire, has super-human strength and the ability to grapple with giant enemies.
- Abe Sapien is only available in multiplayer. Abe was found in a water filled tube in a Washington, D.C. hospital. He is named after Abraham Lincoln and writing on the paper attached to the tube "Ichthyo Sapien". Abe is trained in hand-to-hand combat and uses a rapid-fire, 9mm automatic weapon. He uses martial arts for crowd control and tosses enemies rather than grappling.
- Liz Sherman is only available in multiplayer. Liz was born in Kansas in 1962. At age eleven, she began exhibiting pyrokinetic abilities and accidentally destroyed her entire family in a violent display of her power. Liz has the ability to assault enemies with mind blasts and controlled fireballs. She can also encase enemies and objects in a ball of fire.

Stolen Charms
Hellboy: The Science of Evil #2 from GamesPress- NOTE: Of the two artifacts on this level, only one can be picked up on the first try. The second requires the Grenade ammo from Chapter 3.
- Carpathian Mountains, Romania 2007
-
The Beginning
- CUTSCENE: The game opens with Hellboy running through a forest at night, chasing an unknown object and leaping over an enormous chasm.
- Follow the prompts on the screen to learn the controls. RS tilts the camera in four directions. Walk to the front of the mausoleum to hold RT to lock onto an object and tap X to repeatedly pound it. Repeat this process for the lid of the tomb directly ahead.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy is being spied on by the wild-eyed witch that he was originally chasing. He then gets jumped by a giant monster and pushed into the crypt.
- Approach the small enemies directly ahead and tap RT to grab one. Tap RT again to throw it. Health can be regained by air-slamming the enemy. Just press A, then Y.
- Grab onto the bars ahead and knock them open. (Hold RT, Tap X) Dispatch the small enemies ahead with quick attacks using the X button and strong attacks using the Y button. Also hold RT and tap X to toss any enemies that latch onto Hellboy's back.
- Repeat the door-smashing process to get to the next room.
-
Introductions
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy escapes the tomb and has a chat with the evil, female monster. Hellboy pulls out his gun and pops off a shot at her, only to watch her vanish again.
- Press LT to fire your gun at the 2 small monsters on the gravestones. If you have the gun out of the holster, the game will automatically target any enemies in the area. Kill the remaining 4 monsters with the gun or punching.
- Clear the tree out of the path by hitting the RT, X combo again. Shoot the flying enemy perched ahead by using the RS to manually aim at targets. Punch the fallen tree ahead to continue.
- There will be a glowing green barrier ahead, but you cannot just punch it. When the four small creatures emerge, grab one (RT) while facing the direction of the barrier. Tap RT again to throw the little guy into the barrier to destroy it.
- In the upcoming graveyard, grab the small creatures as they emerge from the green glowing grave and toss them right back into the graves to destroy their spawns. TIP: Use LS to switch throwing targets between graves.
- After destroying 4 glowing graves, kill all the enemies in the vicinity to proceed. The next area will close off again and Hellboy will be forced to fight the witch for the first time.
- The key to this battle is grabbing any small enemy and targeting the witch. A couple hits and she will flee again. Kill all the small enemies in the area to proceed.
- TIP: Before leaving this area, smash open the glowing tomb on the right to pick up some gun ammo.
- Follow the linear path through the next two gates and Hellboy will see a werewolf howling in the distance. Ignore the green glowing coffins for now and head to the right to make an attempt to leave the area.
- CUTSCENE: A cursed gate closes in front of Hellboy and the skull attached to it starts talking to him. It tells Hellboy to find the gatekeeper to pass.
- Walk back and head left in the squeaky gate that opens. Kill the two small creatures before bashing open the tomb ahead.
- CUTSCENE: Inside the tomb, Hellboy finds a talking skeleton who used to be the gatekeeper. He gives Hellboy a mission to destroy the nearby glowing crypts with magical bullet rounds.
- Pop open the gatekeeper wife's tomb with the RT, X combo and load up on the magical ammo by holding RT. Hellboy can switch between both types of ammo by holding LB and using LS to select the type.
- Head out to the main area with the new "Release" ammo and prepare for several enemies to attack. Hellboy can now activate a special fire attack mode by clicking LS and RS together. Use it to bash the heck out the enemies or just shoot them with regular ammo.
- Technically, Hellboy only has to open one glowing green coffin to continue. It's at the end of the graveyard and has a statue of a lady reaching out to it. Shoot it with the new ammo and pop it open with the RT, X combo.
- Reload on both types of ammo and proceed back to the green skull gate to have it open automatically. Hellboy will be awarded his first piece of Lore, a page of a diary from the witch (Bound Love). (1/2)
-
-
Double Trouble
- Head through the dark forest and bash the pile of wooden objects in the way. Inside, Hellboy will be swarmed with small enemies. Use punching here instead of shooting as the reload time is far too long.
- TIP: There is a box of ammo nearby and a green glowing coffin to pop open to reload your Release ammo. To reload the secondary Release ammo, just hold RT over the bed of bubbling flowers.
- In the upcoming area, Hellboy will have to fight off about 30 small creatures. Use the X, X, X, X, X spinning attack for the most effective damage. Also be ready to fight off a new type of enemy, a chain-swinging creature standing to the rear of the area.
- The chain-swinger just takes a few more hits to kill it. After everything has stopped moving, grab some ammo in either room to the left or right before moving on.
- Move to the end of the area and quickly kill two more small creatures before bashing open the tomb to search the catacombs.
- ARTIFACT: Before running through the catacomb, look to the left to see a wall emitting white light. Bash it open and shoot the glowing green coffin to find the Diary of Ileana. (1/2)
- Run through the catacomb and grab some Release ammo at the flower before leaving.
- Another large battle ensues. Use the five X combo to keep the chain swinging enemies at bay. It also bashes the small fries. Each time the werewolves start to howl, another wave of enemies will be released.
- To beat the 6 werewolves, stick to quick attacks. The heavy attack leave Hellboy open to being hurt. Also try to use your special fire attack (Click RS & LS at the same time) to end the fight a bit quicker.
- ARTIFACT: The Eye of Krom artifact can only be reached after completing level 3. After leaving the catacombs and beating off the werewolves, head north up the stairs and lock onto the tomb to the right. One shot of grenade ammo into the door will blow it up and automatically award the artifact. (2/2)
-
Steps and Statues
- Use the RT, X combo to proceed through the stone wall to the right. Hellboy will be fighting several more werewolves and small creatures in the section before the white ghost barrier is removed.
- TIP: There are two small tombs along the path in case you need to recharge Hellboy's energy levels.
- The next area requires Hellboy to climb a hill while being attacked by all three types of enemies. Use the same five X attack combo as previously mentioned to destroy everything and open the white ghost barrier.
- TIP: Pop open the white glowing tomb on the right at the top of the hill to pick up a new type of ammo: Salt. It will freeze enemies in place.
- Head through the former ghost barrier into a clearing where 4 werewolves will attack. Try out the salt ammo or just bash away.
- The witch will attack Hellboy again, but this time throwing exploding heads. Easily dodge the heads by moving left or right and pick up the flaming head with RT. Hit RT again to throw it back into her face three times to end the mini-battle.
- The witch will flee again and Hellboy will be facing a swarm of small creatures and chain swingers. Use punch combos to keep the creatures at bay and the occasional shot when there's time. Eventually the ghost barrier will fall.
-
King's Barrow
- Kill the handful of small creatures before jumping over the fire pit. In the next room, continue smashing six more small creatures to activate the next scene.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy asks a skeleton sitting on a throne which way to go next. After a long speech, the king opens the pathway ahead and Hellboy automatically gets a new piece of Lore (The Buried King). (2/2)
- Move into the next room and jump up to grab the ledge with the two gargoyle statues above.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy exits the cavern only to be knocked off the cliff from an attack behind him. The masked man that hit Hellboy looked very similar to the Nazi robot assassin Hellboy killed in the first movie.
-
On Target
- Follow the path ahead and start climbing the mountain. Follow the fox along the path until you reach a pair of yellow, striped stones. Hang a sharp right and face off with an enemy that moves through the mist.
- To take the tribal torch from the enemy, hit him until he starts blinking gray, but don't completely kill him. Once he is dazed, press RT to grapple with him and B to snap his neck. This will take the torch away.
- Swing the torch sword using X and hit the stone on the right. It will light up to open the gate. Hellboy will face off against several mist warriors. Use quick attacks to fend them off, as their weapon swings are extremely slow.
- Head to the torch in the middle of the pond to load up on Firefly bullets. Hellboy can now shoot the floating stones rather than swinging a torch. Shoot all three stones and the gate will open.
-
Singing Gates
- In the next passageway, fight off eight more mist warriors to open the gate at the end of the area. Bash the rocks for nearby energy and shoot the stones at the end of the passageway to open the gate.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy walks into a clearing and notices a broken statue. A large enemy wielding two maces walks up behind him and grunts.
- Hit the mace warrior with a Firefly bullet and he will be easy to kill quickly. Fight off the remaining 4 mist warriors to release the ghost barrier ahead. Also try to light the two stones to open the gate.
- Two more mace warriors will pop out of the ground to attack Hellboy in the next area. Use another fire bullet to stun one and use the grapple attack to take its mace. Bash the other warrior to bits with the new mace.
- LORE: Follow the path and you will pass a dead Nazi robot. Walk near it to pick up the Lore. (1/2)
- ARTIFACT: Next to the robot, there is a glowing purple object. Walk near it to pick up the Curious Card. (1/4)
- Follow the flags to reach the area with the tall building and prepare for battle. 4 mist warriors and a mace warrior will attack you. Feel free to use the wonderful Firefly bullets, as there is a nearby resupply to the right. Shoot the 3 striped stones to continue.
- Climb the stairs and bash the rock wall to continue (RT, X combo). Two mace warriors will attack. Again, there's a Firefly bullet resupply ahead so use them on the mace warriors.
- Follow along the river. 2 more mace warriors and 4 mist warriors will attack. Fight them with all the Firefly bullets you want. Light the four stones in this area.
- TIP: This is an easy place to get stumped as you think all the stones have been lit. At the ghost gate, hop back in the river to head north. There will be a fifth stone to light in the riverbed far north. Be ready to fight off three more mace warriors when it's lit.
- Pass through the newly opened walkway and proceed to the man standing outside the house.
-
Crimson Snow
- CUTSCENE: A wise old man informs Hellboy that the warriors are here to protect the forest from intruders. The old man warns Hellboy of other intruders in the area and pleads with him to be gentle with the warriors. Lore is awarded automatically (Drafted). (2/2)
- Load up on Firefly ammo and proceed down the grassy path to the north. You will need to be ready to jump from rock to rock twice. Otherwise, it's back to climbing the mountain. Shoot the three striped stones at the gate to continue.
- Hellboy will spot a man walking below and then will be attacked by a freakish gorilla. Jump down and fight off the 4 mace warriors and 7 mist warriors.
- TIP: Use the giant stones nearby to throw at the mace warriors if low on ammo.
- Once the ghost barrier falls after defeating the enemies, head up the mountain to pick up more Heavy ammo and a new type called Splinter ammo. This ammo is shaped like a shotgun shell and sprays the area with magical shrapnel.
- ARTIFACT: Continue up the dirt road and jump up to the top of the mountain. Look to the north to pick up the glowing purple object called the Cicada Stone. (2/4)
-
Whispering Cliffs
- Walk to the giant wooden structure, grab hold of the log and ring the bell. Hellboy will be attacked by a masked figure.
- The trick to this fight is allowing the masked beast to swing the sword before attacking. Also, limit Hellboy's strikes to a series of 2 to 3 punches. The double Y heavy attack works well here. Salt ammo works great for stunning it.
- ARTIFACT: Be sure to use a finishing grapple on the boss. Grab with RT, dodge the counter with Y and finish him with B. Hellboy will get an artifact when he takes the Black Oni Sword. (3/4)
- After it's defeated, a stone bridge will open up. It's to the right of the screen. 2 mist warriors will attack once you have crossed. After dispatching them, follow the path along the mountainside to the river.
- Along the river, Hellboy will have to fight 3 mist warriors and 2 of the masked beasts. Try to take the mist warriors out as quickly as possible before the masked enemies reach Hellboy's position.
- TIP: A good strategy for fighting two masked beasts is spamming the Y attack button. Their attacks can't hit Hellboy in the middle of a punch sequence.
- Allow Hellboy to heal and continue up the river. Take out three more mist warriors and one masked beast before climbing up to the temple area.
- ARTIFACT: Before entering the temple, follow the river to the upper, far right to pick up the Ancient Coin. It's on the riverbank near some trees. (4/4)
- Head into the temple from either side.
-
Temple of Wind
- CUTSCENE: Von Klempt, the boss of the Nazi robots, threatens Hellboy and eventually sends his gorilla minion after Hellboy.
- This is a really tough fight without the right guidance. Stick to heavy attacks only. Y is your best friend in this scenario when hitting. Furiously tap it to stand back up.
- There is no way to avoid the gorilla's attack where he kicks across the room, but you can be ready for the aftermath. Start hitting Y to get back up as soon as it happens.
- Look for a sequence when throwing punches. The gorilla will be able to block many of the punches, but keep throwing them no matter what.
- Use your double stick (RS, LS) fire attack as frequently as possible. It really knocks the heck out of the gorilla.
- Keep attacking until Hellboy and the gorilla have fallen three stories. Once at the bottom, you can grapple the gorilla with RT. Be ready for to press Y quickly to avoid his counterattacks. Hammer him with the X button while he is pinned.
- CUTSCENE: Von Klempt will fall from the top floor and the gorilla will grab a giant log to throw at Hellboy. Hellboy ducks and it knocks Von Klempt down the mountain. Hellboy escapes the temple as it collapses and then gives the stolen artifact back to the old man from the hut.
-
Reunion
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy bashes his way into a village in search of the witch in Chapter 1 and sees a crow perched up near a green, glowing bell. The witch takes form and Hellboy asks her nicely to come down. The witch declines.
- Fight off the swarm of small creatures with your fire attack and five-hit X combo. Once they are dead, take a left at the corner and smash through the wall.
- Pull out the gun and start firing at the small creatures on both sides of the street. Bash the door at the end of the street. Inside on the left, find two more creatures and an ammo resupply box.
- Head through the gate to battle 20 more small creatures. The fire attack works well in the small area as all the enemies are clustered.
- ARTIFACT: Go to the dead end and bash open the small door on the left side of the street. It's marked by a red symbol. Inside is a talking skeleton and the Watchman's Journal. (1/3)
- Bash open the wooden double doors on the main street to continue. At the end of the street, several small creatures and a couple chain-swingers come out to. Use the five-hit X combo to make short work of them.
- Bash open the cracked wall to the left of the giant tree and again to exit the house. Shoot the few small creatures ahead and bash the cracked door directly ahead to pick up some Salt ammo.
-
Big and Small
- CUTSCENE: All the little creatures will be watching Hellboy walk down the street. A giant version of the little creatures emerges.
- This fight is rather easy. Either charge up your fire attack or throw an object to stun him. All you need to do from that point is grapple it with RT, avoid counter attacks with Y and bash his head in with X. The fight will end in less than a minute.
- Follow the circular stone walkway back up to the road level and move toward the open doorway to the north. This will trigger another group of small creatures. After they are dead, move into the small doorway to talk briefly with a crying skeleton.
- Walk to the right to pick off some more small creatures. Hop into the water to load up on Release ammo.
- Climb back up and follow the street around to fight more small creatures and a chain swinger. Eventually, Hellboy will reach a door that needs explosives to get through. Turn around and walk down the street until you reach three Nazi robot soldiers.
- Use Hellboy's special fire attack or simply quick attacks. They are fairly fragile and will die quickly. In the left corner of the area you will find a Splinter ammo and Grenade ammo.
- Head back to the blocked door to find the Nazi soldiers and small creatures in the middle of a brawl. Use quick attacks to take all of them out. When they're down, move on. There is Heavy ammo ahead on the left.
-
Root of Evil
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy prepares to battle more little creatures along with the witch.
- This battle can be frantic. Concentrate on clearing out enough of the small enemies so you can grab the explosives that the witch throws. 3 hits will take her down.
- After all the little enemies are dead the path will open. Head to a dead end and pick up the candle to burn the plants in the way.
- ARTIFACT: There is an artifact that pops up when picking up the candle. You can't miss it (Witch Candle). (2/3)
- Bash through the wooden double door and fight off the two chain-swingers. Head up the right path to pick up another torch (RT), then take a left off a ledge to the street below.
- LORE: After burning the previous roots, a piece of lore will automatically pop up (Bleeding Roots). (1/2)
- Head down the street to run into a group of Nazi robots and small creatures. Use quick attacks and the occasional bullet to kill the entire lot. There is Grenade ammo and Heavy ammo in a stable to the right.
- Walk across the small bridge to encounter the witch again. Take a right to bash through a house wall to escape the ravens. Hellboy will have a chat with a skeleton that committed suicide by hanging. The skeleton will inform Hellboy of an evil cave below the town.
- LORE: After that conversation, a piece of Lore will be awarded to Hellboy (Hanged Mason). (2/2)
-
Branched Alleys
- Bash through the opposite side of the room to leave. The witch will blow out the bridge and Hellboy will be forced to walk back to the previous area. Wade through the remaining small creatures and head back to the broken bridge to jump over it.
- Hellboy will be attacked by two of the earlier bosses. Use the fire attack immediately to stun the first. Repeat the strategy previous laid out to kill it. Hellboy should have enough energy for a subsequent fire attack on the second creature.
- After the two creatures are dead, pop the chain-swinger with a Release ammo shot to quickly continue. Head up the interior of the building with hanging creatures. Start hopping from building to building.
- Back out in the street, Hellboy will be attacked by 5 chain swingers and several small creatures. Use Release ammo on the chain swingers and beat up the rest. Head to the dead end to pick up Salt and regular ammo.
- Bash through the door on the right side of the street to find Nazi robots fighting the boss character. Let the big enemy kill the Nazis. It should be nearly dead when Hellboy attacks. Use B to finish him once Hellboy is riding the monster.
- Grab the candle with the green glow near the gate and burn the red roots in the doorway to the right. Circle around and enter the opened gate.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy has a nice chat with the witch and she sends her small minions after him.
-
Ding Dong
- Beat off the small creatures and head out the gate that opens. Head toward the creepy tower in the distance and go to the door. Once inside, Hellboy offers the witch a one way ticket to hell.
- ARTIFACT: You may have seen it in the cutscene. It's near the entrance and has to be picked up during the first portion of the fight. If you are out of Release ammo, use the witch's projectiles to blow up the gate around the artifact (Priest's Journal). (3/3)
- TIP: Don't use the gun in this portion. It's fairly useless when dealing with the witch.
- The strategy to kill the witch is the same. Pick up and throw her green explosive projectiles back at her (RT both times). After three direct hits she will hit Hellboy upwards. The fight will continue on the second floor ledge.
- Upstairs, she will only need 2 direct hits. The camera angle is tough to deal with, but simply run forward and back to avoid her throws. After 2 hits, the fight goes up into the attic. Circle around the room and hit her twice again to trigger the final scene.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy gets tossed out into the tower and the witch thinks he is dead. He yanks a giant bell loose overhead and it drops to kill the witch. We last see Hellboy freaking out as the tower starts to crumble.
-
Undervillage
Hellboy: The Science of Evil #5 from GamesPress- NOTE: One of the three artifacts can't be acquired on the first try. Reload the first chapter of the level after gaining the Ignite ammo at the end.
- Buried City, Romania, 2007
-
The Catacombs
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy stands up and spots the witch crushed under the bell. He spouts a Wizard of Oz joke and starts his way down the catacomb.
- CUTSCENE: A talking rat tells Hellboy that the passage ahead is not safe for him.
- Pick up the salt ammo in the nearby broken chest and head into the next hall to battle six Nazi robots. Try to keep them clustered otherwise they will shoot at Hellboy from a distance.
- There are 2 more ammo boxes at the end of the hall: Heavy and Grenade. Head down the stairs and through the red root walkway. Don't worry about shooting the lizards just yet. Hellboy will spot a giant version of the tentacled creatures.
- ARTIFACT: Just to the right, there is a collection of four red roots. You can't pass through here until you receive the Ignite ammo later in the level. Shoot the red roots with the Ignite ammo and pick up the Pilot's Goggles. (1/3)
- Walk through the tunnel and hop off the walkway to push up the level on the right (RT, X combo) to open the gate ahead.
- ARTIFACT: Pick up the large hammer and bash the red egg sack on the left to get the Frog Egg artifact. (2/3)
- Bash the walkway in the middle of the room to knock it down. Prepare to fight off the tentacled lizards. They attack extremely slow and it's very simple to control the crowd with quick attacks.
- Over the walkway, hop up the stone to the right to skip past the red pointy stingers and follow the path to another level handle to push up on the right. It opens the gate ahead.
-
-
Interlopers
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy sees the Nazis working on a large object below. He watches as they are attacked by the lizards. After the cutscene, a piece of Lore will automatically be awarded. (Krieger Machinations) (1/2)
- ARTIFACT: There is an Old Sword locked away in a gate off to the extreme left of the cavern (first floor). The gate can only be opened by tossing three enemies into the giant metal pit in the center of the large room. (3/3)
- In the large room, take out the first Nazi and move to the right. Leap up onto the stone walkway. More Nazis will be shooting from the walkway, but they will be occupied with the lizard creatures as well. Allow the creatures time to wear down the Nazi robots before attacking.
- Pick up some Splinter ammo on the walkway and jump back down. After all the enemies are dead, a small gate to the north will open. Head through and jump the ledge to pick an unlit torch. Light it at the green fire (B) and swing it on the red roots ahead to continue.
- Fight off the five lizards and repeat the burning process ahead. Take the elevator up by holding down RT next to the chain. In the following passageway, Hellboy will face off against four more lizards before leaving on the broken walkway.
- In the giant room with the unlit torches, fight off three waves of lizards. A great way to kill them quickly is knocking them into the spiked pit below. Just bash away until all twelve are dispatched.
- After the ghost barrier dissipates, Hellboy will finally have access to the Ignite ammo. Head to the bubbling larva to pick up five rounds. Hellboy can light all torches with this type of ammo and burn red roots.
- Shoot the red roots on the opposite side of the room to continue. It's also a good idea to backtrack and reload up that new ammo before proceeding through the open doorway.
-
Colosseum
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy will chat with another skeleton hanging from the wall. It will chat about the creepy creature Hellboy spotted at the start of the level. At the end of the scene, the final piece of Lore will be awarded. (Hyborian Tale) (2/2)
- Don't worry about the lizards crawling on the walls. Save your ammo. Walk down the passage and Hellboy will eventually jump into a coliseum surrounded by the lizard creatures. A larger version of the creature will emerge and knock Hellboy down.
- This mini-boss fight couldn't be simpler. Grab a nearby sword and hit the creature a couple of times. Drop the sword and use RT to grapple the dazed monster. Hit Y at the quick-action prompt and B to finish it.
- Despite all the creatures cheering above, Hellboy will only have to defeat 3 regular lizards to release the nearby ghost barrier.
-
The Grinder
- In the next room, charge up Hellboy's fire attack to destroy the group of six lizards.
- TIP: Instead of shooting the red root twice, shoot the nearby torch holder once and grab a torch to burn both sections of the red root.
- Grab another chain elevator (RT) to head upward and battle more lizards. Pick up a nearby sword to knock this portion out quickly. There's also a torch to burn the red roots nearby if you prefer saving Ignite ammo.
- Continue through the open passageway to find yet another lever to push up. It's on the left.
- TIP: In the next large room, Hellboy will notice a poorly lit torch to the right. Knock two lizards into the pit to get it fully lit. Once both torches are fully lit, and all enemies are eliminated in the area, the path will open.
- Repeat the process in the following room, but on both sides this time. After the gate opens, two more lizards will appear. Use the nearby swords and hammers to defeat them quickly.
- Move into a room with a large book at the end of the cavern and fight off the remaining lizards that come running through the halls. There are plenty of Ignite ammo reloading stations in this room.
- A mini-boss creature will appear (the same as you fought in the arena) when approaching the book. Stun him and repeat the process as outlined earlier. Fight off the remaining lizards with the surrounding weapons.
-
Feeding Room
- CUTSCENE: The room will start to collapse and Hellboy will leap to safety in a nearby tunnel.
- Load up on the Ignite ammo in this small room. Bash the cracked wall to the left to continue. On this walkway, Hellboy will alternate between fighting lizards and using the nearby torches or Ignite ammo to burn the red roots. Continue this pattern until reaching the chain elevator.
- At the top of the lift, walk into the next room to find a few Nazis fighting the lizards. Take them out fast with a series of quick attacks and grab the Heavy ammo if needed.
- In the next area, use the many weapons around the room to defeat 3 waves of lizards. You can also burn the nearby red roots to find more weapon stashes.
- Climb up the left side of the room to reach a couple more lizards. Also, find some red roots. You can burn them for more ammo. Take a lit torch up the path with you to burn more red roots in Hellboy's way.
- Hellboy will run into some shooting Nazi robots, but they are nothing more than a nuisance. Continue up the path and past the spiked red root. The walkway will wind around. You will find yet more red roots to burn and groups of lizards.
- After some lengthy battles, Hellboy will reach a long walkway over a giant gorge. Walk into the room at the opposite side to fight a mini-boss creature. Hellboy also has to demolish the room by smashing the three stone supports on the surrounding walls.
- TIP: Each time Hellboy smashes a support, eight lizards are unleashed on him. The fastest way to finish this is to smash all three supports in succession, then power up your fire attack to take out any remaining lizards.
- After the lizards have been dealt with, climb on top of the center pillar and use the RT, X combo to smash it once.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy ends up making the entire room crumble to bits. He leaps to safety and smashes through a nearby wall, but falls into an abyss.
-
Lost and Found
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy is seen trudging through a desert and cursing himself for finding himself in this position.
- Follow the dirt path and grab some energy from the boxes to the left. Head to the right and up the crumbling mountain.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy comes across a fallen soldier who tells him of the invading Nazi soldiers and their thirst for power. At the end of the scene, a piece of Lore (Outpost History) is awarded to Hellboy. (1/2)
- Grab the nifty flaming sword to the right of the fallen soldier and head right up the mountain. At the top of the mountain, giant blue tentacles will pop out of the ground, blocking the exit. Bash the orange crystals to make one break off. Pick it up and throw it at the tentacles to continue.
- Take a right along the wall of the ruins and Hellboy will reach a archaeological dig site. When the two undead soldiers pop out of the ground, grab the sword on the right and slash away. They use very slow attacks and are no match for quick slashes.
- Travel north to find more undead soldiers stumbling to Hellboy's position. Grab the blocks and barrels around Hellboy. Toss them at the enemies to distract them and then run into the cave on the right. Smash the orange crystals.
- TIP: The undead soldiers draw their everlasting power from the nearby blue tentacles. Once the tentacles are destroyed with an orange crystal, the undead are one hit away from death.
- ARTIFACT: After destroying the blue tentacles, walk back to the tunnel with the orange crystals, go to the end and hang a right. The Alien Artifact sits at the end of this tunnel. (1/4)
- In the next ruin walkway, a new enemy will emerge. These undead creatures have spiked, electrified poles for hands. Use the nearby sword to make short work of them.
- Pass through the blockade (RT, X combo) and watch as a portion of the mountain collapses in front of Hellboy. Blue tentacles pop out of the ground on the right and 7 undead soldiers emerge.
- Use the same strategy as the previous encounter. Head to the orange crystal patch to the right and break off a piece. Hit the tentacles and the undead will all go down with one hit each.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy has another chat with a fallen soldier about their predicament. At the end of the scene, Hellboy receives a piece of Lore: the Bullet Case. (2/2)
- TIP: This useful piece of Lore allows Hellboy to craft bullet casings for the orange crystals in the caves and shoot them at the undead. He can carry a max of 7 bullets.
-
Bridge Accident
- Head down the tunnel and hang a left at the broken wall. Load up on orange crystals and shoot the undead walking in Hellboy's direction. Walk outside and do the same to the undead holding the giant guns. Head down the walkway.
- CUTSCENE: Two tentacles will pop out and break the walkway. Hellboy will fall down to the sand below.
- At the bottom of the pit, Hellboy will be attacked from the left side by 15 undead soldiers of all types. Conserve your crystal ammo and use the orange-coated swords. They will destroy the enemies with one hit.
- TIP: When you grapple one of the undead soldiers, always hit Y to perform a pounding attack. Otherwise, they will break free.
-
The Fallen
- As Hellboy travels down the canyon area, race past the next set of undead to find a patch of orange crystals on the right. Smash them to load up on ammo. Shoot the blue tentacles to the north. Backtrack to kill the group of undead you passed.
- ARTIFACT: Travel to the end of the path and wait for the undead carrying the large grenade launchers to appear. Turn around and look behind a green tent to find the Archaeological Journal. (2/4)
- Shoot the three grenade-launching undead above. Climb up to face another 10 undead soldiers coming from the left side. Feel free to use all the crystal shot that you desire. There are plenty of ammo stations around the area.
- Walk to the left and fire on the tentacles to the right. Continue making your way through the ruins, firing on any undead along the path. Eventually, you will come to a walkway with undead grenade launchers shooting at you from a distance. Just run forward and the grenades won't hit Hellboy.
- Hang a left and tear down the passageway, killing any undead with the crystal bullets. Eventually, a row of tentacles will pop up an start throwing debris at Hellboy. Just get close enough to fire crystal rounds into them, or run past it all.
- Hellboy will reach a stone building in the center of a construction area. You will need to kill all the undead in the area to gain access to the building. Use the swords scattered around, as well as crystal ammo to finish quickly.
- Once inside, load back up on crystal ammo and jump down the hole.
-
Underground
- ARTIFACT: Pick up the Alien Emblem to the left of Hellboy's starting position. Just climb up the stairs and it will be at the end of the walkway. (3/4)
- Undead will be firing machine guns at you from across the cavern. Kill the first batch as you turn the corner around the staircase. The one across the cavern can be picked off with crystal ammo.
- TIP: This portion can be confusing, as the destroyed walkway appears to be the way forward. Walk back up the stairs and look for a circular hole for Hellboy's fist. Use the RT, X combo to rotate the circle and a giant building will be raised.
- Once inside the building, climb two sets of stairs to find another circular fist device. Use it to rotate to move the building safely to the floor of the cavern. Move downstairs into a second building of similar design. Continue downstairs and into a large cavern with an enormous orange crystal.
-
Crystal Prison
- CUTSCENE: As Hellboy walks into the cave, he hears a faint rumbling. Suddenly, the giant crystal shatters and a tentacle monster appears.
- This boss fight can be very difficult. The monster fires undead soldiers into the arena, as well as using its tentacles to attack Hellboy.
- The in-game instructions tell you to activate the statues around the ring, but that's not the first step. The first step is grabbing a large chunk of crystal that the tentacle monster knocks down, and then launching it into its open mouth.
- The mouth is located on the top of the monster and only opens up when it starts to scream at Hellboy. Instead of throwing the crystal immediately when you see it opening, wait until the mouth opens during the latter part of the scream.
- To throw the crystal, hold down RT and use the RS to aim into its mouth. Otherwise you will end up hitting one of the undead.
- If you manage to hit it successfully, it will pause for a moment and collapse in front of one of the three statues. Go behind that statue and use Hellboy's fist to activate it.
- This will blast the monster in its face and send it reeling. Repeat this three times and the fight will move outside.
- CUTSCENE: The monster freaks out and sends Hellboy flying out of the cavern and back into the desert. Up at the top, Hellboy receives an artifact: the Alien Weapon. (4/4)
- This portion of the fight is much simpler. Hellboy has to hit the monster on the mouth ten times to kill it. The armor over the mouth will start to shatter as the fight progresses.
- The monster will still attack with the tentacles and there will be plenty of undead in the area. Fortunately, the sword is powerful enough to knock all the undead back. The area is also large enough to avoid tentacle strikes.
- CUTSCENE: The monster flails overhead and eventually explodes in front of Hellboy.
-
Barbed Shoreline
Hellboy: The Science of Evil #7 from GamesPress- CUTSCENE: Hellboy awakes on a rocky coast without his trench coat and his shirt is in tatters. At the shack, he tries to call in a status report, but Von Klempt was listening in. Hellboy is awarded a piece of Lore (Von Klempt's Lair). (1/2)
- TIP: For this level, be sure to perform the finishing move whenever possible on Von Klempt's Nazi robots. Hellboy will be rewarded with Charge ammo.
- Head into the mine on the left from the shack. As Hellboy exits, head to the right side of the screen and to the left after the two statues. There will be two Nazis in this hallway and two more in the following.
- Near the flowing green gas, there is a lever. Pull it using the RT, X combo. It's lit up with little red lines. Head in the next room to battle seven Nazi soldiers as well, then load up on Grenade ammo near the entrance.
- Walk down the long path next to the sub and fight off another barrage of soldiers. Grenade ammo works very well against these enemies.
- As Hellboy climbs up to the second floor walkway, the gorilla from a few levels ago will be firing a heavy machine gun at him. There are few enemies here, so just run to the opposite side and head up the stairs to the 3rd floor.
- ARTIFACT: Cross over to the opposite side again, but take a right over the sub to find the Black Oni Mask at the end of a narrow walkway. (1/4)
- Instead of climbing the stairs to the fourth level, climb the metal crates in the center of the 3rd floor. Take out the two soldiers on the narrow walkway and head across to drop into the control room.
-
-
Von Klempt's Kitchen
- Jump the soldiers inside the control room and continue outside into the rock tunnel. Two more soldiers will be waiting ahead.
- ARTIFACT: As Hellboy enters the following storage room, the Frog Worm Specimen will be sitting behind the crates. (2/4)
- In the first science laboratory, smash up about 6 soldiers and the upcoming ghost barrier will drop.
- CUTSCENE: In a room off the science laboratory to the right of the entrance, Hellboy will have a conversation with another skeleton about the history of the castle and its occupants. Hellboy will receive a piece of Lore: Silent Witness Speaks. (2/2)
- Pull the lever at the door using the RT, X combo to open the next gate and release four soldiers. Kill them to release the ghost barrier.
- In the next chamber, the gorilla drops down to greet Hellboy. Use explosives or Charge ammo to soften him up, then hit him with repeated heavy attacks. The fight will be over quickly.
- In the second science lab, there is an Ignite ammo resupply to a little room to the right of the entrance. Walk around the perimeter of the room until you see a circular staircase. Follow it up and continue along the path to reach another encounter with the gorilla and a couple soldiers.
- Fight the gorilla using the same strategy as before. Exit the room to see alarms ringing. Head right and bash through the cracked door. Circle around again to see Nazi robots fighting the lizard creatures. Allow the fight to continue for a bit, then take them all out with the five-hit X combo.
- Leave the room only to enter another Nazis vs. lizards fight. Feel free to use all the Ignite ammo you want as there is a recharge station at the end of this hallway.
- ARTIFACT: In the next room, the artifact is a bit hidden. Run through the debris on the right side of the room to find the Green Gas Tank. (3/4)
- Follow the straight, stone staircase up to the next floor. Circle around the top and enter a dark, circular room. Move to the opposite side and head up another staircase. There will be four soldiers at the top to greet you.
- After taking them down, exit at the south and continue up the stairs. There will be one soldier to the left tossing grenades. Pop him with a grenade of your own. There is also a Heavy ammo resupply to the right.
-
Ruptured Courtyard
- Smash open the double doors at the end of the passageway. A large lizard creature will appear, but it will be preoccupied with beating up the Nazi robots. Use the explosive barrels to the left to thin their ranks and weaken the lizard.
- Once they have fallen, Von Klempt will release three white gorillas after you. Hang back while the lizards and gorillas duke it out. Attack the gorillas using the same strategy as before. After the three are dead, the ghost barrier around the cracked window to the north will be released.
- Pound on the cracked window using the RT, X combo and chase after Von Klempt. Beat down the three lizard creatures and jump up the broken stairs to the right.
-
The Bridge
- At the top, head north across the walkway and beat up 2 soldiers to the left and the right along the path.
- Once you get near the blockade, the crazy gorilla that Hellboy fought in Japan will appear. Hit it with explosives and make all attempts to jump over the chain attack. If you have Hellboy's fire ability ready to go, juice it up and pound on the ape. A quick action combo should pop up immediately after that.
- Beat down the four soldiers and 1 lizard ahead to advance to the double doors. Pound them open to reveal a maze of busted gas lines. Drop down to the left side and proceed through the door on the left. There will be a lever inside to turn off some of the pipes.
- Repeat the process on the next room to the left, and then on the lever in the open passageway to the east. Head to the far back of the area to encounter a couple lizards before heading up the stairs.
- Outside on the walkway, fight 3 more lizards to release a ghost barrier and yank a gas lever on the left as well. Fight off another white gorilla once outside as well as a few lizards. The gorilla's explosion will knock open a hole in the floor.
- ARTIFACT: Walk down the hallway into Von Klempt's study. Look to the left and destroy his desk to get Von Klempt's Diary. (4/4)
- Head through Von Klempt's study and up the elevator at the end of the passageway. Feel free to skip all the fighting enemies and head up the circular stairs and into the doorway.
-
Final Showdown
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy enters the tower, but Von Klempt tells him that he's too late. Von Klempt releases a massive beast of a creature, combining elements of all previous creatures into one.
- TIP: Save Hellboy's fire attack until later in the fight.
- The opening of this fight is extremely confusing because Hellboy can't grapple the creature when standing at its front. Move behind the creature for the entire fight before hitting RT to grapple. While inside, throw explosive barrels to quickly daze the creature.
- Also use up any fire or explosive ammo on the creature. Strong attacks work as well. If Hellboy gets hurt badly, run around the lab in circles to avoid the creature's grasp.
- Once the creature has been hurt badly enough, a scene will show Von Klempt being burnt alive in his control room. Continue hurting the beast. The second scene will show the monster launching Hellboy outside to the castle floor below.
- Be wary of the creature when it crouches down on all fours and shoots a green beam of energy at you. Run around the arena throwing the concrete blocks at the creature's head.
- Eventually the third scene will show a hovering, robotic device transporting Von Klempt's head around. The creature send lizard minions out to defeat Hellboy, as well as use a pushing beam. This is an excellent time to use Hellboy's fire ability if you have any juice left in it.
- Once the creature has taken enough damage, a fourth scene will show the power source on the creature's back. Hellboy decides to plug it up with Von Klempt's head.
- Look around for the head and target it with RS. Click RT to pick it up and head for the monster. This is the time to use any remaining ammo on the creature. Also, be sure to jump to avoid the creature's shockwave attack that sends a ripple of green energy around the ring.
- When the creature is finally dazed, run behind it and click RT to grapple the creature. B will shove that head into his power source.
- CUTSCENE: Hellboy shoves Von Klempt's head into the creature's back and grapples with the tentacles. The creature overloads with energy and explodes, sending Hellboy out of the Castle into the nearby ocean.
- Congratulations, You have just beaten Hellboy: Science of Evil!

Achievement Tips
- If you followed the walkthrough, you will already have all the level and artifact achievements. Here is a bit of advice for some of the remaining, tougher achievements.
- Armed and Dangerous: The best place to complete this is The Fallen on the Tunisia level. The key to this achievement is taking out blue tentacles first and using the RT, B combo on the flashing men with the giant guns. Use the giant gun to kill the remainder of the flashing undead, move to the next save point and reload the chapter until you hit 25 killed.
- Chiropractor: Ape spines are found all over chapter 6, but they are fragile. Von Klempt's Kitchen is a decent place to continually after killing enemies with the ape spine in the first lab.
- Goal!: Use an encounter with the witch to kick her thrown heads around until the achievement pops up.
- Angry Plumber: Rip the drain pipes off buildings in the third level and beat the groups of small enemies.
- Egg-splosive: Frog eggs are found on the fourth level. Load up the first chapter and use the red eggs in the first room with lizard enemies.
