Early in the 2010 NCAA Football season, Michigan Wolverines quarterback Denard Robinson was the early favorite for the 2010 Heisman Trophy. Robinson was praised for his awareness to lead the team as well as his ability to run the ball, breaking the team's single-game rushing yards by a quarterback record twice in the first two games of the season. Through the 10th week of the season, Newton had scored more touchdowns alone than 71 FBS teams during the year, but off-field allegations of bribery and cheating also surfaced, working against him.http://espn.go.com/college-football/heisman10/index

On December 6, 2010, Newton, along with Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, Oregon Ducks running back LaMichael James and Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck were named the Heisman finalists for the 2010 award.http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5892523
