Heifer International is a non-profit organization that provides gifts of livestock and plants to financially-disadvantaged people around the world. Additionally, Heifer provides education on how to best use their gifts in an attempt to provide a more permanent solution to global hunger and poverty.
Controversy
Criticism of Heifer has come from vegans and animal rights activists who, while they agree with the organization's goal of ending hunger, disagree with the treatment and sale of animals for use as food and otherwise.Do Life Right: [http://www.doliferight.com/blog/2007/10/vegan-perspective-on-heifer.html Vegan Perspective on Heifer International The UFETA (Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) also questions the validity of Heifer's mission; they claim that Heifer's methods of fighting hunger on a large scale are misguided, that simply donating a cow to a family will not make a difference in the long run.UFETA: [http://www25.uua.org/ufeta/heiferproject.htm What's Wrong with the Heifer Project?
