Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper

  • Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper is an American astronaut for NASA and a captain in the U.S. Navy. She was the first woman named lead spacewalker on a NASA mission. Stefanyshyn-Piper has flown two space missions, including a November 2008 Endeavor mission in which she led a spacewalk team on the International Space Station.

    While performing repairs on the International Space Station during a seven-hour shift on November 18, 2008, Stefanyshyn-Piper was reported to have lost a bag of tools after a grease gun exploded, forcing her to lose hold of the bag. Co-spacewalker Stephen Bowen shared tools with Stefanyshyn-Piper for the remaining hours of their shift.

  • Missions

    • 2006: Served as mission specialist on 12-day mission to International Space Station, including two space walks that totaled 13 hours and eight minutes
    • November 2008: Lead spacewalker on Space Shuttle Endeavor. Two-week mission to International Space Station included three planned spacewalks, as well as the building of additional crew quarters, a life support system and a Resistive Exercise Device
