In 1997 Heather Grow endured 13 hours of labor giving birth to her daughter Cassie. Cassie had become stuck in the birth canal causing the difficult birth.
Doctors tried to push the 9 pound baby out, which caused the baby's head to be damaged.
Grow was told months earlier that she had a narrow pelvic arch which causes difficulty in giving birth. Two weeks before the delivery, doctors realized that the baby was too large to be delivered vaginally. She was eventually delivered by cesarean section.
Cassie Grow suffered from brain damage and now at age 10 she has limited use of her limbs, has problems with her vision, and has a mild case of mental retardation.
Lawsuit
Even though doctors realized that the baby was too large for Grow to deliver vaginally, they kept giving her drugs which would keep her uterus contracting.
This caused the baby's head to continually be pushed against Grow's pelvic arch. Grow sued the doctors for negligence and was awarded $22.6 million dollars after the jury found the doctors responsible for the injuries.
