  • Early Life

    Shuler was a promising collegiate football player who finished second in Heisman Trophy voting in 1993 to Charlie Ward. In 1994, Shuler signed a seven-year, $19.25 million contract with the Washington Redskins, but he was traded to the New Orleans Saints in 1996. After being plagued with injuries, he finished out his career with the Oakland Raiders.
  • Political Career

    In 2006, Shuler defeated eight-term incumbent Republican Congressman Charles H. Taylor. In his campaign, Shuler characterized Taylor as too close to George W. Bush. Shuler maintains conservative positions on many issues, and often votes with Republicans.
