After starring in a string of big-budget films including The Patriot and A Knight's Tale, Ledger changed the direction of his career and began to take roles in more independent films. In 2005, Ledger earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in Ang Lee's 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. On January 22, 2008, Ledger was found dead in a New York City apartment. His death was ruled to be an accidental prescription drug overdose.
