Heart and Souls is a 1993 Universal Pictures supernatural fantasy/comedy film. Its all-star cast includes Academy Award nominees Robert Downey, Jr., Elisabeth Shue, Alfre Woodard, and David Paymer; Golden Globe winner Kyra Sedgwick; and Golden Globe nominees Charles Grodin and Tom Sizemore. The film was nominated for multiple Saturn Awards in 1994 including Best Supporting Actress for both Sedgwick and Woodard and Best Supporting Actor for both Sizemore and Grodin. At the beginning of the film, four characters catch an electric bus in San Francisco. They are Harrison Winslow (Grodin), a singer whose stage fright keeps him from ever auditioning; Milo Peck (Sizemore), a petty thief who plans to go straight after he returns stamps he had from a little boy; Penny Washington (Woodard), a black single mother of three, who works nights to support them; and Julia (Sedgwick), a young, single woman who will not commit to her boyfriend John. On the same night, a woman is going into labor as her husband rushes her to the hospital. Due to a mishap, the electric bus comes off its cables and plummets off an overpass causing the deaths of its passengers and driver. Their spirits are pulled from the wreckage and drawn to the newborn, Thomas Reilly.

As Thomas grows from newborn to child, the spirits still have no idea why they are chained to his side and why only he can hear and see them. Because of his "invisible friends," Tommy continually gets into trouble. Finally, the spirits decide they must disappear on him, an event that traumatizes him for life.

As an adult in his 30s, Thomas (Downey, Jr.) is a shrewd businessman who has trouble opening up to people. He is dating a woman named Anne, but is unable to meet her desires for commitment.

One day a bus appears to pick the spirits up and take them to Heaven so that their souls may be reused for new lives. The bus is driven by the same driver, Hal, who caused their deaths in the first place. He explains that they were supposed to be visited by an angel who would tell them that they were to use Thomas as a means of finishing their uncompleted business on earth. When the driver learns that no angel was sent, he grants the spirits a minimum amount of time in which they may use Thomas' body for these means. The spirits reappear to Thomas and explain their situation. Reluctant to help them at first, he gradually decides to help his childhood friends. The bus continues to return to claim each spirit once his or her mission is complete.

Milo uses Thomas to steal back the stamps from the beginning of the film and return them to their owner. Harrison uses Thomas to sing in public, on stage at a concert. B. B. Finally, Julia uses Thomas to bring a letter to her former beau John, explaining that she had loved him. Unfortunately, John has passed away before Julia's letter is able to reach him. She realizes that for her unfinished business, she must make sure Thomas does not make her commitment mistakes. Before the bus comes to claim her for Heaven, she wishes that she could give Thomas a hug. A higher power complies and Julia becomes flesh and blood for an instant so that she may hug him goodbye.

Thomas returns to his girlfriend Anne after his experience with Julia and assures her of his love for her. They reconcile beneath a starry sky, where four stars (signifying his friends in Heaven) shine brightest.
