History
The Health Care Reform Bill, or America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, is aiming to provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans. It includes a public health care option that will compete with private health insurance companies. The bill is designed to extend health insurance to millions of Americans who currently lack it. http://www.healthreform.gov/about/index.html- The Bill is brought before the United States Congress on November 7, 2009.
- The Health Care Reform Bill has met with much controversy. The members of the Republican Party have unanimously rallied against the bill, while some Democratic Party members oppose it too. Main argument is the expected unfairness of competition between public services and private health insurance companies.http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/08/07/palin-says-obamas-plan-overhaul-health-care-evil// http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/aug/07/john-boehner/boehner-says-democrats-health-care-plan-would-lead/
Just prior to the vote, a last minute compromise amendment on abortion was passed. This amendment prohibits the insurance plan from covering elective abortions.http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-na-health-house7-2009nov07,0,5267162.story

Presidential Statement by Pres. Obama
"Tonight, in an historic vote, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would finally make real the promise of quality, affordable health care for the American people.- The Affordable Health Care for America Act is a piece of legislation that will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance; quality affordable options for those who don't; and bring down the cost of health care for families, businesses, and the government while strengthening the financial health of Medicare. And it is legislation that is fully paid for and will reduce our long-term federal deficit.
- Thanks to the hard work of the House, we are just two steps away from achieving health insurance reform in America. Now the United States Senate must follow suit and pass its version of the legislation. I am absolutely confident it will, and I look forward to signing comprehensive health insurance reform into law by the end of the year."
