Background
Harry James Potter was born July 31, 1980 in Godric's Hollow, England. His parents, Lily and James Potter were wizards and members of The Order of the Phoenix, a group dedicated to fighting the evil Lord Voldemort and his followers. Before Harry's birth, a prophecy was made indicating that Harry would be the one wizard with the power to kill Lord Voldemort. Based on hearing part of this prophecy, Lord Voldemort sought out the Potters to dispatch Harry.
On October 31, 1981, Voldemort - using inside information from Potter family friend, Peter Pettigrew - attacked killed Lily and James Potter. Harry was also struck by the "killing curse", but miraculously survived, left with a lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead.
Harry spent the next ten years of his life being raised by his Aunt Pentunia (Lily's sister) and Uncle Vernon. He was ill treated and forced to sleep in a cupboard, until his tenth birthday when the half-giant, Hagrid arrived and told that he was a wizard and had been accepted to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
It is at Hogwarts where Harry befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and begins his quest to destroy Lord Voldemort.
