Hall of Famer Harry Howell is a retired professional ice hockey defenseman who played in the National Hockey League for 21 seasons with the New York Rangers, Oakland Seals, California Golden Seals, and Los Angeles Kings.
He also played with junior hockey team Guelph Biltmores, American Hockey League's (AHL) Cincinnati Mohawks, and World Hockey Association's (WHA) New York Golden Blades/New Jersey Knights, San Diego Mariners, and Calgary Cowboys.
NHL Career
Howell started his professional career with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL) as a defenseman for 17 seasons from 1952 to 1969. He served as Rangers' team captain in the 1955-56 and 1956-57 seasons and played his best seasons with the Rangers in the mid-1960s, earning team MVP honors in 1963-64 and winning the Norris Trophy in 1966-67 as the league's top defenseman. He was also a seven-time NHL all-star and became one of the most popular players in Rangers history, winning the Fan Club's Frank Boucher Trophy in each season from 1965 to 1967.
After playing 17 seasons with the Rangers, he played with three other NHL teams: the Oakland Seals (1969-70), California Golden Seals (1970-71), and Los Angeles Kings (1971-73).
Other Leagues
Howell was signed by the New York Rangers as a free agent in 1949, but first played with the Rangers' junior hockey affiliate, Guelph Biltmores for two seasons. He then played with AHL's Cincinnati Mohawks in the 1951-52 season before entering the NHL with the Rangers.
After his long 21 seasons in the NHL, he played one season each with three WHA teams: New York Golden Blades/New Jersey Knights (1973-74), San Diego Mariners (1974-75), and Calgary Cowboys (1975-76).

Coaching Career
After Howell's retirement from pro hockey, he became an assistant general manager with the Cleveland Barons in the 1976, and then became a full-fledged general manager with Cleveland until they merged with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978.
