Harriet Tubman

Born into slavery in Maryland around 1820, Harriet Tubman escaped to become an ardent fighter for abolition and women's suffrage. She became known as "The Moses of Her People" for her work helping other slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

Timeline

  1. 1844: Marries John Tubman, a free black man
  2. 1849: Escapes from slavery to Philadelphia
  3. 1859: Buys land in Auburn, NY to use as a safe-haven for slaves
  4. 1861: Serves in the Union Army during the Civil War
  5. 1863: Advises armed raid on several plantations
  6. 1896: Keynote speaker at first meeting of National Federation of Afro-American Women
  7. 1908: Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged opens
