  • Career

Killebrew started out his career with the Washington Senators in 1954, and although he impressed many with his exceptional right-handed power, he did not play a full season until 1959, when he hit a league-high 42 home runs. In 1961, the Senators moved to Minnesota and became the Minnesota Twins, and Killebrew followed. Over the next decade, Killebrew proved himself one of the best home run hitters and RBI producers the game had ever seen, hitting over 40 home runs in eight seasons between 1959 and 1970 and driving in 100 or more runs nine times in his career. He helped lead the Twins to the World Series in 1965 and won the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1969, after clubbing 49 home runs and 140 RBIs. Killebrew finished his career in 1975, playing his last season for the Kansas City Royals. At the time of his retirement, Killebrew was fifth on the all-time home run list with 573 round-trippers; he is currently number nine, although Alex Rodriguez is widely expected to eclipse him sometime in 2009. After he retired, Killebrew became an announcer for the Twins, and later for the Oakland Athletics.
