Harith al-Obeidi is a senior Sunni lawmaker who was shot and killed after delivering a sermon at a mosque in western Baghdad on June 12, 2009. The gunman, who was chased down the street by mosque guards, detonated a grenade, killing himself and an unknown number of pursuers. Life and Career
During the Iraqi legislative elections in December 2005, al-Obeidi was elected to the Council of Representatives of Iraq for the General Council for the People of Iraq party. He went on to become the deputy chairman of the Parliament's Human Rights Committee and was known for his dedication to various human rights causes. In April 2009, he became the leader of the Iraqi Accord Front parliamentary block.
