Dr. Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character created by novelist Thomas Harris. A former forensic psychologist turned psychotic serial killer, Lecter appears in a series of four novels: Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising.
All four novels have been adapted for film and Red Dragon has been the basis for two movies, the first of which was Michael Mann's 1986 Manhunter, which featured Brian Cox as Lecter. Sir Anthony Hopkins won an Academy Award in 1991 for his portrayal of Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Hopkins returned to play the cannibalistic doctor in both Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002). Gaspard Ulliel was cast for the part in 2007's Hannibal Rising, which details the story of Lecter's early life.
