Very little is known about Hannibal the man, although his tactics and strategies are still studied today. In 218 B.C., he began a campaign against Rome by attacking a city in Spain. He went to Italy from Spain by crossing the Pyrenees and the Alps. He crossed late in the season when winter was closing in. He crossed with elephants, cavalry, and footmen.
