The Hamster Dance is an animated Web site first posted to the Internet in 1998. It features dozens of cartoon hamster images that dance to a high-pitched nonsensical musical track. Hamster dance is one of the first viral videos to gain prominence and became popular before the advent of video sharing sites like YouTube. Hamster Dance can also refer to other videos of hamsters dancing on the Web.Web Upon: Viral Videos: Five Internet Phenomenon of Internet Past (October 9, 2008)
Ray Roy's Hamster Dance
In 2006, a multimedia performance artist Ray Roy created a surreal video featuring hamsters and dancing. Roy danced in a white sweater with pastel prints and green short-shorts. While dancing, Roy produced a hamster from a black fanny pack around his waist. The dance was then repeated with Roy stripping of his sweater, and then his shorts, eventually wearing nothing but the strategically-placed fanny pack. As of November, 2008, Roy's Hamster Dance video has received nearly 3 million views on YouTube.YouTube: Ray Roy's Hamster Dance (Time 1:45)
