Hampton University is a private, historically black institution of higher learning in Virginia. Some notable alumni include, Booker T. Washington, Rick Mahorn, and Yasmin Shiraz.
During the early hours of Sunday, April 26, 2009, three people were injured in a shooting at Hampton University's Harkness Hall Dorm. The shooter is reported to be a former student and is one of the injured. The students and staff were notified about the shooting through e-mail and text messages. Located in southeastern Virginia, Hampton University is a non-profit, co-educational, historically black university offering liberal arts, professional, and graduate degree programs. Founded by Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, the school was intended as a place of education for newly-freed people who could learn and then go out and teach each other.
