Mission 2: Relic Approach
- YouTube: Halo Wars Walkthrough - Relic Approach Part 1 HD (Time: 5:13)
- Watch the cutscene. It seems that the local covenant are up to something.
- Black Box Location: North-West of your base. The black box is behind an energy shield. You'll need infantry in order to get it.
- New Objective: Get Alpha Base Online
- In this mission you learn how to build a base. The game lists each individual aspect of building your base as a separate objective.
- NOTE: In this mission your building is regulated in order to teach you how to play. You can only create buildings in the order the game dictates to you. So don't worry about building the wrong thing.
- Your cursor starts highlighted over a potential base. Unlike many other real time strategy games, you can't build just anywhere. Instead you can only maintain a base at specified locations.
- Highlight the center of the base and press A. The command circle comes up.
- TIP: The command circle allows you to quickly select buildings and units to create.
- There is only one available option on the command circle. Press the Left-Stick up to choose Station and then press A to build it.
- TIP: The station is the main hall of your base. It doesn't do much by itself, but if it's destroyed then the whole base goes down. All other buildings are connected to the station.
- You'll see that there are 5 potential building sites next to your station. Highlight one and the command circle comes up.
- Again you only have 1 option here. That's building a supply pad.
- TIP: Supply pads are your main source of income in Halo Wars. Simply having one gives you a steady stream of resources to build your army. A supply pad can even be upgraded later to increase its productivity.

- Highlight another building site. This time select the Barracks option.
- TIP: The barracks is where you can train infantry units. To build them, highlight your barracks and select Marine. This will build 1 marine squad.
- To continue you'll need to train 5 marine squads. You can Que multiple marines at once. This way when one squad is done training, your barracks will immediately start training the next squad.
- TIP: Besides supply pads, you can also collect loose supplies with your units. Select a marine and then press X over a nearby supply crate. The marines will gather these supplies and add them to your total.
- Once you have 5 marines trained your mission objectives change.
- New Objective: Fight Your Way to the Structure in the Ice
- You can leave your base now, but it's not a good idea. Instead learn about the other buildings you can create. This makes the mission much easier.
- Highlight another building site and create a Reactor.
- TIP: You need more than just supplies! In order to get more advanced units you'll also need power. Every reactor you have gives you 1 point of power. Keep in mind that power isn't consumed like supplies. You're power will never go down as long as your reactors aren't destroyed.
- Select your supply pad and press A. There is an option to upgrade it to a Heavy Supply Pad. This is well worth the investment and dramatically increases your incoming supplies.
- Now select your station. You'll notice that you can build warthogs here, although you don't really need them. There is also an option to upgrade your base into a Fortress. This upgrade gives you some extra building sites. So spend the money and upgrade.
- YouTube: Halo Wars Walkthrough - Relic Approach Part 3 HD (Time: 5:21)
- When your fortress is done upgrading, you'll get two extra building sites. This is extremely helpful.
- Build 2 more supply pads and another reactor. You'll need the extra resources. Make sure you upgrade your supply pads into heavy supply pads. The upgrade is very cheap.
- TIP: Just like supply pads, reactors can be upgraded to produce extra power. This upgrade is very expensive though. It's recommended that you always build 2 reactors initially. This produces just as much power, but is cheaper than simply upgrading your first reactor.
- Now build a Vehicle Depot. Vehicles are great against infantry units, but less powerful against air units. There are some exceptions though.
- With 3 heavy supply pads you'll soon have tons of resources.
- TIP: Every base has 4 turret pads that are separate from the other building sites. You can only build turrets on these.
- You won't need turrets in this mission, but in other missions they are very helpful. Make sure to build them as soon as possible. They are a big help against enemy attackers.
- When you have 1200 supplies, upgrade one of your reactors into an Advanced Reactor. This improves it's total power outage. You should now have a power level of 3.
- Highlight your vehicle depot and build a scorpion.
- New Unit: Scorpion
- Scorpions are an excellent ground vehicle. These tanks easily cut through infantry. They can learn the canister shell ability at the vehicle depot.
- TIP: The command circle on most buildings is set up so that potential units are on the right side of the circle and unit upgrades are on the left.
- You have enough infantry, so now you'll just want to build vehicles. Train 5 more scorpions and 3 cobras as you get the money.
- New Unit: Cobra
- YouTube: Halo Wars Walkthrough - Relic Approach Part 4 HD (Time: 4:50)
- The cobra is an anti-air and siege vehicle. You can upgrade their plating at your vehicle depot. You can enter Cobras into lock down mode by pressing Y. They gain a massive siege attack, but lose the ability to move until you unlock them (by pressing Y again).
- Research the canister shell ability at the vehicle depot. This gives your scorpions their Y attack. A big cannon blast that will decimate enemy units!
- Now highlight your barracks and research the New Blood upgrade. This adds an extra marine to each squad. A very cheap and essential upgrade to your infantry.
- Press LB to gain control of all your units. It's time to head North and fight.
- Go North across the ice. There are some loose enemy troops here, but you'll decimate through them.
- Soon you'll run into a large gun tower. Your marines can take cover under the nearby pelican. Simply press X over it and your marines will take cover automatically.
- TIP: Taking cover reduces the amount of damage your units take. Only infantry can take cover though. Your vehicles cannot.
- Destroy the sniper towers using grenades and cannon shots. Press Y over each tower to use these special abilities.
- Optional Objective: Kill 20 Jackal Snipers
- Move North and you'll find a covenant base guarded by hunters. Hunters are anti-vehicle units. Take them out with your infantry's grenades.
- Optional Objective: Destroy the Covenant Base
- You don't have to do this, but you should.
- Kill all of the nearby enemy units first. Then attack the base's citadel. This is the center of the base. If you destroy the citadel, the entire base goes down. Otherwise, you can just destroy each building individually.
- YouTube: Halo Wars Walkthrough - Relic Approach Part 5 HD (Time: 6:04)
- Use grenades and cannon shots to destroy the citadel quickly. Have your cobra's lock down and siege the base as well.
- The base goes down without much of a fight. You can now build another base at this spot if you want. But for this mission, you won't need to.
- TIP: During this battle your hero Forge might die. If this happens he becomes "Down". Simply bring another unit by him to rescue him. The downside is that he's now on foot. There is no way to get his warthog back until the next mission.
- If you want to complete the optional objective, travel West along an optional path. You'll find the rest of the jackal snipers here.
- SECRET: When you kill 20 jackal snipers, the Grunt Birthday Party Skull appears back at your main base. The location will highlight on the minimap, but only for a few seconds. This unlocks Achievement: Alas, Poor Andrew Thomas.
- Keep going West to find 2 more optional objectives.
- Optional Objective: Rescue all Trapped Warthogs
- The first set of warthogs is easy. Just travel South-West. There are 2 warthogs behind an energy shield.
- Next head North to get the next optional objective.
- Optional Objective: Destroy the Covenant Methane Refinery.
- This is really easy. The buildings are right in front of you and they're hardly guarded. Just blow them up with your tanks.
- Time to rescue the last two warthogs. Travel South-East from where the covenant base was. You'll find the last two warthogs behind an energy shield.
- Go back to the covenant base you destroyed. Just North is an energy shield guarded by a few towers.
- Destroy the tower and have your infantry take down the shield.
- YouTube: Halo Wars Walkthrough - Relic Approach Part 6 HD (Time: 6:04)
- This is the end of the mission. To win you must break through the remaining covenant forces.
- The enemies here don't put up too much of a fight. It's mostly just grunts with a few other units here and there. Your tanks will rip through them easily and you'll probably only lose a unit or two. Just take down the enemies one at a time and make sure to use your Y abilities.
- At the ice cave's entrance you'll find a bomb detonator. When you see it, immediately focus all of your units on it.
- Use your grenades and cannons to destroy that detonator. Once it's gone, the mission is complete.
- Achievement: Momma's Boy
