Halo Combat Evolved Walkthrough

This page is a full text walkthrough for the 2001 action sci-fi first-person shooter video game Halo: Combat Evolved, also known as Halo. Halo was initially released for the Xbox, followed by releases for the PC and Mac OS X. It has been followed by two successful sequels, Halo 2 and Halo 3. The Halo franchise is one of the biggest names in both the gaming and online gaming communities.

Like most first-person shooters, Halo is very linear in nature. There are no side missions or branching in the story line. Similarly, gameplay follows one path. If you get lost, look for moving enemies.

Fundamentals

  1. Your shields will deplete with enemy fire, but recharge after a few seconds. Get behind cover to allow them to recharge. If you continue taking damage once your shield is depleted, you will lose health. Find a Medkit if you get low on health. They are white with a red cross on them and are scattered throughout the game.

  2. Ammunition is not always plentiful. Swap your weapon for an enemy weapon if you need to.

  3. Walls and large objects work best for hiding behind. Halo does not have a cover system like later games. You will need to manually remove yourself from the line of fire.

  4. There is typically only one way to go. Follow your men or look for enemies if you get lost.

  5. The Covenant will show no mercy. Show them none in return. Keep shooting until your enemy drops his weapon. Be warned that the enemy will sometimes fire off a few shots in their death throes.

  6. Aim for the head. Aim for the body if you can't hit the head.

Weapons

  1. Pistol - This is an excellent mid-range sniping weapon. It has excellent power but a low rate of fire. It is accurate, but can be a bit rare later in the game. The Pistol is most effective against Grunts, Jackals and Elites.

  2. Assault Rifle - This will be your staple weapon. It is fast, decently-powered and very common. The Assault Rifle is excellent for killing Grunts, Jackals, Elites, Flood and Carriers. Note that the Assault Rifle's effectiveness decreases over distances. This gun is best used at short to medium ranges.

  3. Shotgun - This weapon appears later in the game. This gun will be your best friend once you meet The Flood. The Shotgun is very powerful, but short-ranged. It can kill anything short of Elites and Hunters in a single shot. Best used at short range.

  4. Sniper Rifle - This weapon is the best bet for hitting distant targets. It typically kills in one to three shots. It only carries four shells in a magazine. It is rare at best. Use only when needed. The Sniper Rifle is highly effective against Jackals and Elites. Don't bother using it on Drones, Grunts or Hunters.

  5. Rocket Launcher - This is the best weapon for eliminating Hunters and large groups of enemies quickly. It is devastatingly powerful and has a large area of effect. It is also rare. Use only as needed. Do not fire at close range.

  6. Plasma Pistol - This weapon is found on Grunts and Jackals. It is low-powered but very common. It can charge up and fire a more powerful attack. Doing so will train the battery faster. Firing this weapon quickly will overheat it. The Plasma Pistol and it's cousin the Plasma Rifle are equally effective against all opponents.

  7. Plasma Rifle - The Covenant equivalent of the Assault Rifle. The Plasma Rifle has good power, range and accuracy. It will overheat if fired repeatedly. Use in short bursts.

  8. Needler - This is an exotic weapon carried by Grunts, Jackals and some Elites. It fires heat-seeking needles that explode on impact. Firing a large volley at a single target will cause a huge explosion. This weapon is relatively common. It is best used at medium range.

  9. Frag Grenades - These are common in the early levels. They are excellent for clearing groups of enemies in tight confines such as hallways. Make sure it doesn't land too close. They are effective against everything but Hunters.

  10. Plasma Grenades - These are very common. They can be found on Grunts, Jackals and Elites. They stick to many targets (yourself included.) They are excellent for dispatching tough enemies like Elites quickly. They are moderately effective against Hunters. They are very effective against everything else.

Enemies

  1. Grunts - These are the small Covenant troops that sound like Three Stooges. They are slow, weak and easy to kill. Any weapon works well against them. They can typically be killed in one to three pistols shots. Note that if they are near an Elite, killing the Elite will cause the Grunts to scatter.
  2. Jackals - These are tough Covenant troops that carry shields. They use the charge attack on their Plasma Pistols and can be dangerous if left alone. Pistols and Snipe Rifles work best for taking them out.
  3. Elites - These are the cream of the Covenant crop. They are fast, tough and very dangerous. They carry a variety of weapons from Plasma Rifles to deadly swords. Shoot Elites before anything else. They are highly susceptible to Shotguns, Plasma Grenades and Sniper Rifles.
  4. Hunters - These are large Covenant shocktroops. They carry a devastating Plasma Cannon and a large shield. They are only susceptible to Rockets and Shotguns. Try to destroy them with vehicles or gun turrets.
  5. Flood - These are the small insectoid-like creatures that come with The Flood. They are weak against every weapon and require next to nothing to kill. Their greatest threat is numbers. They will approach you and explode. They cause little damage on their own, but are very dangerous in large numbers.
  6. Drones - These monstrosities are the agents of The Flood. They are born from humans and Covenant alike. One blast from a Shotgun will kill them at short range.
  7. Carriers - These bloated horrors are charged with spreading The Flood. They will explode if they get near you. Shoot them immediately upon sight. They are weak against everything. Like Drones, they are best dispatched with the Shotgun.
  8. Sentinels - These machines are agents of The Monitor. They float above the ground and use lasers to burn enemies like The Flood and you. They are vulnerable to Shotguns at close range.
