Halloween cakes can be as simple or as elaborate as a cook wants to make them. The complexity can depend on the person's kitchen prowess and the amount of time he or she wants to spend on the project. If there are children in the home, Halloween cake baking and decorating can become a family activity. The entire family can enjoy creating holiday-themed desserts and devouring the finished product.
Halloween Cake Ideas
One idea for a Halloween-themed cake is to add some orange food coloring to a white cake, bake it in a sheet pan and top it with chocolate frosting. Once this is done, the cook can stick small plastic or candy grave stones on top of the cake. Next, he or she can use green icing to create a grass-like effect. This will create a scary Halloween graveyard. Bakers may want to add plastic or candy ghosts, ghouls, skeletons and bats to enhance the effect. A cook can also decorate a sheet cake with a crashed UFO model and some aliens for a Martian crash Halloween cake.
How to Make Kitty Litter Cake
Chef Jennifer Martello demonstrates how to prepare a kitty litter cake. These Halloween cakes are made to resemble used kitty litter boxes. They are served in an actual kitty litter box with a cat litter scoop.
The recipe calls for Tootsie Rolls, Golden Oreo cookies, green food coloring, vanilla cake, chocolate cake and vanilla pudding. In the first step, she breaks the chocolate cake up into pieces and layers it in the bottom of the kitty litter box. This process is repeated with the vanilla cake, and it is topped with vanilla pudding. Next, the Oreo cookies are crushed and green food coloring is added. The mixture is spread over the pudding. Finally, Tootsie Rolls are shaped and added to the top.
