Hal Gill is a professional ice hockey player for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. He is a defenceman and shoots left. He wears #75 for the Habs, and is an imposing 6'7" tall and 240 pounds. He was signed as a free agent on July 1, 2009 after helping the Pittsburgh Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2008-2009.
Prior to his NHL career, Gill attended and played for Providence College. He was drafted 207th overall in the 1993 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins, but stayed in school for four years following the draft. Gill made his NHL debut with the Bruins in 1997, playing 68 regular season games and six playoff games his rookie season. In 2000, Gill represented Team U.S.A. in the World Championships for his first of four times. He continued with the Bruins over the next several seasons, playing for Lukko Rauma in Finland during the 2004-05 NHL Lockout. On July 1, 2006, Gill signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs to a three year contract. He continued with the Leafs for the next season and a half, when he was sent to the Penguins at the trade deadline. After he helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup, he signed a two-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens on July 1, 2009 worth $4.5 million.
Career
During his long career in the NHL, Hall Gill has never been considered a goalscorer, but rather a force on the blueline. His career-high for goals scored in one season is 6 (scored in 2006-2007 while playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. At the end of the 2009-2010 season, Gill had played 919 games in the NHL, scoring only 33 goals and 129 assists with 868 penalty minutes.
2009-2010 Season
The well-travelled Hal Gill brought a lot of experience and knowledge to the Montreal Canadiens blueline. In October, 2009 he blocked a total of 24 blocked shots and 17 hits. He is one of the team's alternate captains. He played 68 games for the Habs in 2010, scoring 2 goals and 9 assists to go along with 68 penalty minutes. Although he is not known as a scorer and playmaker, he did register a 3-game point scoring streak from March 11 to March 16, registering 3 assists. He also blocked a game-high 9 shots against the Washington Capitals on April 15.
