  Nicks had a standout prep career, leading Independence High School to the 4-AA Championship, in which he was named MVP.   Nicks joined the Tar Heels for his freshman season in 2006, starting and playing in 11 games. He set tied a school record in his first game when he caught seven receptions. Nicks set several records in 2007, including for catches, yards and touchdowns in a single season. His numbers improved in 2008 as he led the ACC with 57 catches, 976 yards and eight touchdowns during the regular season.
