The Gunpowder Plot of November 5, 1605 was a failed attempt by a group of English Catholics to kill King James I of England and blow up both houses of parliament. 17th Century England was ruled by a protestant king, and dominated by a protestant aristocracy. Catholics were persecuted during the rule of King James I, and Catholic intolerance led to the desire to overthrow Protestant rule. The plot proved unsuccessful, as many of the conspirators were caught, tortured, and executed.
