General Gameplay Tips
- Use the maps in the pause menu to navigate the land. Look for red X markings on the map for important mission objectives. The red X markings also appear on the HUD radar.
- Pistols have unlimited ammo. Always try to use the pistol at close range. It conserves the ammo for other weapons and has the benefit of quick-draw mode.
- Constantly save the game after every minor victory. A pointless death can easily erase progress in side missions.
- There are no differences in the horses. The horse is only as good as the upgrades Colton has purchased or earned for it.
- Hold down LB when mounting a horse. It offers a slight speed boost at the start and helps tremendously in the Pony Express missions.
- Keep an eye on the health meter of a horse. Losing a horse during an extended battle may mean death for Colton.
- Try to shoot dynamite or whiskey bombs out of the sky when thrown at Colton. The damage from the blast may hurt the enemies in the vicinity.
- Attack side missions as soon as they become available. Colton's skill abilities increase drastically if side missions are completed early. The increased skills help with boss fights.
- Check the compass if lost. Enemies are marked on the compass in a bright orange color. Horses are a dark brown and friendly characters are blue. Enemies on an elevated level are marked with a tiny arrow.
- Try to avoid shooting near the townsfolk of Dodge or Empire. They become enraged and start attacking Colton.
- Always be on the lookout for replacement ammo boxes. They are littered around missions and inside the two main towns. Try to restock ammo every time Colton enters Dodge or Empire.
Act I
- CUTSCENE: The scene opens on a windy desert in 1542. Coronado's second expedition is making their way through the open plain. Suddenly a group of savage Indians appear from the dust and slaughter the entire group of men.
The Hunt
- NARRATION: "Montana, 1880. My name is Colton White. My father and I hunt game for the steamboats traveling the Missouri. Not a bad living if you can stand your old man kicking you every morning at dawn..."
- CUTSCENE: Colton White's father kicks him and they set out to hunt wild game.

- The opening portion of this level explains the movement controls. Use RS to move the camera and LS to move Colton. RT draws the pistol and fires the weapon. Follow Ned up the dirt path directly ahead. Ned shoots a deer at the ridge and drops to the grass below.
- Drop to the grass below and follow Ned's instructions. Shoot three quail with RT as Ned scares them out of the brush. Hit RB to enter quick-draw mode on the next batches of quail. Use LS during quick-draw mode to move between targets automatically.
- Follow Ned and reload the gun by clicking LS. Look for a few wolves to tear down the path just ahead. Use quick-draw to kill all of them. Move up the small hill and pull out Colton's rifle by pressing B. Click LB to crouch and follow Ned to the ridge.
- Click RS to enter a zoom mode with the rifle. Look for Elk in the distance. They light up red in the target reticle and also show up on the radar in the right corner. Shoot two of them.
- Follow Ned to the left and drop off the rocks. Wolves descend on the fallen elk. Run to their position and fire shots on the wolves. Use X to slash with the knife if a wolf gets too close.
- CUTSCENE: Ned looks for some tracks on the ground and a giant grizzly bear attacks him! He drops his rifle and falls to the ground in pain.
- Go directly forward to pick up Ned's rifle immediately. It's more powerful than Colton's rifle and necessary to kill the bear. Click Y to pick it up.
- Aim for the bear's head to get the most damage per shot. Sidestep the bear when it charges and whip around to fire more shots. There is more ammo on the ground near Ned. Try to keep the bear away from Ned as well.
