Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s is the third installment in the popular Guitar Hero music video game series. Players use a guitar-shaped controller to simulate playing rock music by hitting notes as they scroll on the screen. As implied by the title, the game consists of songs, playable characters, fashions, and artwork from the 1980s. Some reviewers considered it as more of an expansion pack than a title in its own right, as no gameplay changes were introduced from Guitar Hero II.

Game mechanics are nearly identical to Guitar Hero II. The primary differences are mostly aesthetic. The design of the six returning characters (Johnny Napalm, Judy Nails, Izzy Sparks, Pandora, Axel Steel, and Grim Ripper) is influenced by styles of the 1980s. Returning venues have also been redesigned with a 1980s influence, and the interface has corresponding color changes.
