The Guinea Pig is a rodent originating from the Andes mountains area. It is a member of the Caviidae family, native to South America. While Guinea Pigs are often eaten in their native region, they have been used in North America as subjects for scientific experimentation, and have become popular pets.
Guinea Pigs As Pets
Pet guinea pigs are distinct in a number of ways from most other domesticated rodents. They are tailless, large (up to ten inches long from nose to rump), and are often fluffy and colorful. They do not climb, can be responsive and affectionate, and emit a trilling sound similar to a cat's purr. Like other rodents, however, including rats and hamsters, Guinea Pigs can be messy and odorous. Softwood shavings (cedar and pine) have been as bedding for Guinea Pigs in the past, but are now known to contain harmful toxins.
