Guillermo Zuloaga
Guillermo Zuloaga is the president of Globovision, a 24 hour television news network in Venezuela. He is also one of Hugo Chavez’s biggest detractors and opponents. Globovision is Venezuela’s only Independent television network and has been known for being Chavez’s most vocal detractor since RCTV, another openly anti Chavez station, was forced off the broadcasting arena. First in 2007 the station was forced off the broadcast airways and then in January of 2010 RCTV was forced to shut down its cable and satellite channels. http://www.aolnews.com/world/article/chavez-arrests-tv-network-owner/19415549
Zuolaga was arrested on march 25, 2010 for making comments against Hugo Chavez’s government. In a move designed to curb opposition criticism against the government the bill prohibits Venezuelans from spreading information that is considered false and may cause panic through any type of media. The arrest was in response to remarks made by Zuloaga at an Inter American Press Association meeting held on the island of Aruba. He made statements criticizing Chavez and his government for cracking down on critics and thereby limiting free speech. http://www.aolnews.com/world/article/chavez-arrests-tv-network-owner/19415549
Zuloaga was arrested as he and his wife were boarding his private plane in preparation to depart on a vacation on the island of Bonaire during the Easter weekend. He was released later in the evening and required to remain in the country until an investigation is concluded. http://www.aolnews.com/world/article/chavez-arrests-tv-network-owner/19415549
Guillermo Zuloaga has stated that he simply related some historical events and that he has done nothing wrong and that Venezuelans should have a right to say what their opinions are about public figures. http://www.aolnews.com/world/article/chavez-arrests-tv-network-owner/19415549
Zuologa has been at odds with the Venezuelan government in the past. In May of 2009 he was investigated for suspected environmental offences relating to wild animals he hunted and then had mounted in his home in Caracas. Then in June of 2009 prosecutors charged him with usery relating to alleged charges that he allowed unlawful markups at 2 Toyota Dealerships that he co owns.
