Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro, along with Alejandro Gonz& and Alfonso Cuarón, is one of the so-called 3 Amigos, Mexican directors who gained critical attention in America in 2007. Del Toro's film, Pan's Labyrinth, won 3 awards at the 2007 Oscars - Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Best Art Direction.
Career
Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, a teenage del Toro became fascinated with the work of Alfred Hitchcock, George A. Romero and other auteurs of the horror genre. In his early twenties, he formed the special effects company Necropia. His career as a film director began with the 1993 vampire film Cronos and has since navigated between big budget Hollywood (Mimic, Hellboy) and more personal cinematic statements (The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth. He has been confirmed as director of The Hobbit (prequel to The Lord of the Rings), and his latest film, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, is slated for release July 11, 2008.
