History

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, commonly known as the Guggenheim, opened on Oct. 21, 1959 to house Solomon Guggenheim's private art collection. It was the second museum opened by the Solomon Guggenheim Foundation—the first opened at 24 East 54th St. in 1939. The collection quickly outgrew the original space and Frank Lloyd Wright was asked to design a permanent space to house the collection. It took Wright 15 years to design the museum, but the result was a space as much a work of art as those contained within.

In 2005, the museum's exterior underwent a major restoration aimed at returning it to its former glory.

Highlights

The Guggenheim Museum's permanent collection gives you the chance to experience the history and development of modern art first-hand.
