  • Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated annually in the United States and parts of Canada on February 2. In folklore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on the 2nd and sees its shadow, winter will continue for another six weeks. If the groundhog fails to see his shadow, winter will end soon. Punxsutawney Phil, resident of Gobbler's Knob, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, is considered by many to be the one true prognosticating groundhog. The first official celebration of Groundhog Day was February 2, 1886. In the 121 years of Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 97 times and did not see his shadow 15 times. There is no record of what happened in the remaining 9 years. Phil's prediction's have been correct 39% of the time.Stormfax: Groundhog Day History
