Groucho Marx

  • Comedian and actor Groucho Marx performed in over a dozen films with The Marx Brothers, and hosted the game show You Bet Your Life in the 1950s. He is known for his witty one-liners, and a quirky facial disposition, including mustache and cigar.
  • Career

Marx and his brothers performed on the vaudeville circuit as singers before transitioning to comedians. After the development of Groucho's wise-talking character, the brothers had a series of hit plays on Broadway before signing with Paramount Pictures in the late 1920s. After Duck Soup, the team moved on to MGM where they released A Night at the Opera.

Marx began hosting You Bet Your Life when it premiered on radio in 1947. In 1950, the show switched to television and ran until 1961. Though some contingencies believe many of Marx's one-liners were scripted, the consensus remains that Marx ad-libbed the majority of his jokes.
