Plot
The main character, Manny, is a travel agent for the dead. His clients are recently deceased and supposed to be ready to move on with their afterlife. In order to do that, Manny's clients have to make it across the Land of the Dead into the Ninth Underworld. Those who are pure of heart are able to take a speedy train to the Underworld, but sinners have to make a four year journey on foot.
Manny starts getting suspicious when one of his clients is forced to head to the Underworld on foot, even though she was a very good person. Upon further investigation, Manny discovers a scam where certain people are taking the train tickets to give them to an Underworld crime boss.
Department of Death Year 1
Take a moment to get used to the controls, if you haven't before.
Examine the message tube first to hear about the mass poisoning.
Walk to the desk with the stacks of books and pick up the pack of cards sitting on it.
Now walk out the door (towards the camera).
Go up to the receptionist's desk. Pull out your pack of cards and use the hole-puncher on the far side of the desk to punch a hole in one card. This will be useful much later on.
Go in the left door past the desk to go down an elevator.
You will see a car drive out of the garage. Go to the opposite corner of the garage from where you started to find a small shack. Knock on the shack's door to talk to Glottis, the driving demon.
Go through the conversation options until Glottis agrees to drive you if you can get a work order signed.
Now return back up the elevator you came down here in.
Go through the other door once you get back up to the receptionist's desk to go down another elevator.
Go outside through the front door and walk into the alleyway you find.
In the alleyway, find the rope and use it to climb up.
Walk into your bosses' office window.
Go up to his computer and change its automatic answer to "Ah, cripes, Eva! Just sign it yourself, will ya? I'm busy!"
Go back down the rope and out to the road.
Go forward towards the big festival.
Go towards the bread (Pan de Muertos) and pick one up.
Talk to the balloon animal guy and go through the conversation points to get one of every balloon animal he makes, plus an extra "dead worm". You have to always put away your balloon every time with P to ask him for another one.
Go back up to the receptionist's desk and use the work order on her to get it signed.
This will trigger a cutscene to take you to the land of the living.
Once you are there, simply use your scythe on the wriggling bag to trigger another set of cutscenes.
Go back in the elevator you are coming out of to move downstairs.
Go into the door on the right (the one the mail demon didn't come out of) and use your "dead worms" on the two different embalming foam squirters.
Now go back to your office and use both of those dead worm balloons on your mail tube to clog it up.
Go back down to the lobby. The receptionist, Eva, should say "The server's down again."
Now go through the left door, the one the mail demon came out of. The mail demon will be inside there, fixing the mail system.
Make sure you use the lock on the door going into the mail area before you attempt to leave the room or talk to him.
The mail demon should catch on fire after you talk to him, causing you to grab the fire extinguisher.
Once you leave the room, the mail demon will go as well, not realizing that you messed with the lock. Now you can reenter the mail room and get inside.
Use your card with a hole punched in it to examine the mail. If there is not a hole in your card, this will not work.
This sets off another set of cutscenes.
Talk to Meche as long as you like, then move on by saying you "have to go straighten this mess out".
Walk down the hallway to trigger more cutscenes with your boss.
You'll end up locked inside Glottis' hut. Walk up to the door and knock on it to talk to a shadowy figure guarding the door.
Say that "[You're] thinking about getting out and getting even." then say "The DOD runs a crooked game, and I intend to prove it." then "I'm gonna blow the lid off this place!" This triggers more cutscenes.
Tell the leader of the Lost Souls Alliance that you're "in." Keep talking to him until he tells you to get pigeon eggs.
Exit this secret underground area by moving into the light elevator shaft.
Go up the rope in the alleyway.
Move around to the other side of the building and enter the clear windows to get in Don's office.
Hit the punching bag three times to get Don's mouthpiece.
Open the red desk and use it again to pick up a coral.
Go back out the window and use the coral on the loose end of the rope so you can throw it across the gap.
Move up the ladders to get to the roof.
Find the food bowl and use first a balloon animal (other than a dead worm) then the bread to attract over the pigeons so they can pop it and get scared off.
Now you can move up to the eggs and pick them up.
Move back down to ground level, then into the open garage.
Move into the small hut and use Don's mouthpiece on what looks like a coffee machine inside there.
Now turn around where you're not looking at anything you can use, and press Enter while holding the mouthpiece to make an imprint of your teeth.
Go back into the underground lair by using the conspicuous blue eye in the alleyway. Show the mouthpiece to Eva then give the pigeon eggs to the leader.
This triggers more cutscenes, taking you to the petrified forest.
Petrified Forest
Move back towards the camera. You will find and talk to Glottis.
Glottis takes his heart out of his chest and throws it into a spider web behind him. You have to retrieve it.
Run behind the web and pick up a bone. Throw it into the spider web, then use the scythe on it.
Now go back near Glottis to pick his heart up and put it back inside him.
This triggers a cutscene.
You will now be in control of the car. Drive off the right side of the screen.
Use the wheelbarrow in front of this huge tree and push it left and right until the two left pumps move together and the two right pumps move together. The tree will start to shake violently.
Use the switch and Glottis will climb up on the tree. Use the switch again while Glottis is up on it to shake it out of control and destroy it through a cutscene.
You will get back in the car, but press Enter to get out immediately. Move over to the weird tree sign thing and pick it up, carrying it with you over to the left path.
You end up in an area with lots of open tree paths in every direction. Plant your sign down, and it will spin around and point in a specific direction. Do not enter a tree in that direction, but rather just pick the sign up and move it further in that direction. The sign is just pointing to a spot of ground where you need to place it to get a key.
Move down into the earth when you have planted the sign in the correct area.
Snake through this area and use the sign to get a key.
Now move back to your car and drive it to the path going up.
Get out of the car and move into the door going through the gate here.
Use your fire extinguisher to drive away the beavers, then pick up three bones from the dam. Only certain spots will let you pick up a bone, just find them by pressing Enter.
Now move down the little left path in the dam area. You have to, three times, throw a bone into the tar, then pull out your fire extinguisher and spray it on the beavers as they dive in to kill them.
Once this is done, move back outside and use your key on the lock to open the gate.
Now you can drive on to Ruvacaba, which goes through a short cutscene.
Ruvacaba
- You will go up the stairs here. Move on to the right into the fog to trigger a short cutscene and meet the sea captain.
- Walk up stairs into the diner and talk to the janitor. Go through the conversation options until you get a picture of his wife.
- Go downstairs and show the picture to the captain. Talk to him until you get his log.
- Go back upstairs and show the log to the janitor to end Year 1.
- YouTube: Grim Fandango: End of Year 1 (Time: 3:07)
Year 2
Go inside then left into your room.
Pick up the LSA communications from the desk.
Now move through the door that was on the right to go downstairs.
Manny will automatically move towards the camera where you'll see Glottis.
Talk to him if you want, then go behind the bar to pick up the gold flake liquor.
Go through the next door on to reach the room with a roulette table. Talk to the little buy in the booth on the right.
Talk to him until you get his fake betting stub printer.
Go back upstairs and talk to Lupe, who runs the coat check counter.
Go outside after this and head downstairs to trigger a series of cutscenes.
Talk to the captain and go through all the dialogue options to find out your next objectives. You now have three separate puzzles to work out. The tools portion is incorporated here into the other two.

Union Card
Head north from the crossroads to see the Blue Casket. Go in the elevator on the left to get back up towards your cafe.
Move up the stairs left of the elevator then up the rest of the way to your cafe.
Go downstairs to the casino area and talk to the small counterfeiter again.
Talk to him about the union card and he'll give you a high roller pass for the cat racing tracks.
Pull out the high roller pass and show it to Glottis and he'll run off for it, revealing an apparent gambling problem.
Go upstairs and talk to Lupe again and she'll say she had a note for you, but she lost it.
Go back downstairs to the elevator with the fish sign above it. Go down the stairs that go toward the camera from that area.
Just run through the path, under the archway then under the blimp, then downstairs when you reach the indoor area.
Manny will say "Hey! A great night for cat races." Go downstairs and turn right.
You'll see a large stuffed cat. Keep moving, going into the area that's lit on the right.
This is a giant litter box. Pick up the can opener on the cat food cans then go back out of the room.
Go back upstairs where the ticket offices are, then go in the small hallway to the left of a ticket office from there.
Move into the elevator to reach the high rollers' lounge. You'll immediately hear Glottis.
Move into the kitchen area and pick up the turkey baster on the bottom left corner of the screen.
The waiter will quickly come in and tell you to get out, then go into a small closet area. Close the doors behind him and use your scythe on the doors to keep him locked in.
This will cause Glottis to get thirsty and come down to drink an entire wine barrel.
Go up the small ladder in the kitchen to get to the top of the wine barrel and use your can opener on it.
Use the barrel again to hide inside it. Don't worry about your scythe getting lost.
This will wind up getting you downstairs. Get on the forklift and drive forward into the elevator.
Turn the forklift around so it is facing the small opening at the bottom of the elevator door then get off of it to press the red button and start the elevator.
Get back on the forklift and drive it forward into that small opening, and you will eventually push the lift through the door to stop the elevator at a secret level.
Get off the forklift when it stops and pull the lever on the left side of the forklift to open up the passageway.
Move forward down the hallway and open the suitcase. This will automatically take you where you need to go to get a union card from the counterfeiter.
Naranja
- Go to the Blue Casket, the main door to the right of the elevator.
- Go in the main door on the right.
- Move straight through the main room, and you'll find Lola in a short cutscene.
- Talk to the club owner as long as you like, then head in the doors just left of there.
- Pull out the turkey baster and use it on the sink to fill it with hookah water.
- Show your LSA communications to the table of three nearest to the camera to impress them, so you can then ask for their book on socialism.
- Go back up to the high rollers' lounge and go off the right side of the screen to find Nick, the lawyer.
- Tell him you need a lawyer, an excellent lawyer, the best excellent lawyer, and that he's the best lawyer. He says no.
- Talk to him again and ask for a lawyer again. Then blackmail him about his picture with Olivia.
- He leaves for Max's office. Pick up his cigarette case, which clearly has something hidden inside of it.
- Leave the high rollers' lounge and go upstairs, then up the spiral stairs to find Carla.
- Show your cigarette case to her and say you found it under her desk, left by a crazy-looking guy.
- This will give you the key. Head back up the stairs to her after you automatically leave.
- Take a swig of your gold flake liquor then step into the metal detector. You'll go into the back room with Carla, where she starts talking, literally endlessly.
- Say "Speaking of metal detectors..." then "Yes." to move on, and she throws the metal detector you need into the giant kitty litter box.
- Go down to the kitty litter box and wave your scyther over it in different places until you pick up the metal detector.
- Leave the cat racing tracks then follow the rusty railroad tracks to the right to find a scrimshaw (tattoos for skeletons) parlor.
- Naranja is inside. Move behind him and off to the left to find a back area with a bed and a refridgerator.
- Open the fridge then the crisper inside it and move back over to Naranja. As they are distracted, put the turkey baster of hookah water into Naranja's drink.
- Use him when he's asleep to get his dog tags.
- Go over to the lighthouse past the seabees, coming off the left path from the crossroads.
- Use your key on the lighthouse door and walk in to see a cutscene and receive a card with a tongue on it.
- Go up the elevator to your club and show the tongue picture to Lupe. She gives you a jacket.
- Use the jacket to find a slip of paper.
- Take that slip of paper to the scrimshaw parlor. Show it to the scrimshaw artist to get a picture of the end of a cat race.
- Move on up to the ticket booths in the cat race tracks. Take out your fake ticket printer and set the values to "2", "TUE", and "6". Show that stub to the window that's not next to the high roller lounge to get a picture of Nick and Olivia.
- Leave for the high rollers' lounge and talk to Nick again to show him the blackmail photo. This triggers a cutscene.
- You are upstairs near the jail and morgue. Go in the morgue, the lower door.
- Throw Naranja's dog tags onto either sprouted body in the morgue, then give the man your metal detector to help him find it. He'll call the captain to tell him that Naranja is dead.
- Run all the way back to your room at the top of your cafe and use the desk. This reveals a magnet that is currently helping the police chief win. Change it so that it doesn't help him win, and the chief will get angry and trigger a cutscene that will eventually end year 2.

Year 3
Run inside the boat right off, and you will see your crew has been sprouted.
Go down the ladder and the game will take over, ending with Glottis pulling you aside into the engine room.
Press the red button on the right side of the room then go over to the throttle levers on the other side.
Press the Right arrow key to move the ship over a bit.
Now press the red button on the right side of the room twice to lift both anchors.
Move over to the window with your scythe and use it on the anchors then press the red button on the left side of the ship to tear open a hole in the ship.
Now you use the throttles again, but press the Down arrow key to trigger a cutscene.
You are now at the bottom of the ocean. Eventually, a little creature will walk in front of you. Talk to him if you'd like, but you can only move on as soon as you stop talking with him.
He'll start walking away and singing, and you have to walk up to him and grab him, giving him to Glottis to hold.
You find the Pearl, another sunken ship. Run along the mountain ledge to the right then up, and keep going until you run a circle around some red tentacles coming out of a rock. Your friend with the light will get stuck in them, which will trigger a cutscene.
Once you get to the Edge of the World, go straight up to the door in front of you.
Go up then right on the catwalks then just keep moving to see another cutscene.
You'll end up in a small room with the Angelitos, two kids with wings. Go through all the conversation options with them, or at least until one of them throws a hammer at you.
Pick up the hammer they threw from the ground.
Run across the catwalks to get back to Meche's room. Use her ashtray and she'll burn her stockings and throw them away.
Walk over to the trash can and pick up her stockings to take them.
Talk to Meche if you want, then exit her room. Take the elevator back down to where you entered the End of the World.
Run off the screen in the bottom-left corner, and you'll see your friend with the light, Chepito, again.
Pull out your tiny hammer and trade it to him for his Bust-All. Then trade him your stockings for a Sproutella gun.
Run back to Meche and give her the Sproutella, and another cutscene will play.
Leave Domino's room and Meche's room to find Meche sealed in to another room just before the catwalks.
The Door Lock
First of all, use the Bust-All on the right side of the door to reveal the tumblers.
Now use the wheel. As you turn it in one direction or another, a full spin of a tumbler will always start to move the next tumbler up, so you can't control the second tumbler until you've done a full spin with the bottom one, going all the way up to the fourth tumbler.
The objective is to have all four tumblers lined up with their flat sides on the right, so your scythe can fit in. Start with the top one, get it lined up, then move the wheel in the opposite direction and only go up to the third one, lining it up. Do this for all four, changing direction of your spin every time you have to change tumblers or if you overshot with the one you're working on. Use small key presses.
Once they are all lined up, press the Down arrow key to pull away from it. Pull out your scythe and use it on the tumblers to stick it in, then use the handle to open the door.
Go in the door and close it behind you.
Use your scythe on the yellow bit on the door to open a secret passageway where Meche is.
Run towards the camera to find an axe you should pick up and take with you where Meche went. You have to walk backwards to drag it.
If you look carefully at the floor in Meche's area, you may notice that in the middle there is a white tile next to a black tile that is slightly raised. Drop your axe on it to reveal a secret hole in the ground.
Beach
- You'll now be on the beach. Run towards the camera then up the slope with the grinding gears.
- Keep moving up until you are in control of the crane, with a wide scope view of the End of the World.
- Press Down immediately to lower the crane's scoop.
- Run down to the scoop and use the Bust-All on it to separate the scoop from its chain.
- Run back up to the crane and press Down again, to see the chain go into the grinding gears. Press Up after that to launch the gears out of there.
- Press Right to move the crane all the way to the opposite end of the End of the World, then get out.
- Walk down the conveyor belt you find where you've stopped, and get off at the bottom of it to pull a lever, making the belt run down instead of up.
- Run back up the conveyor belt into the crane, and press Down. You'll get a short cutscene showing the chain moving all the way down the belt.
- Move down the belt again, and keep going until you get a short cutscene and you find Glottis.
- Talk to him quickly, then run back up to the lever underwater. Pull it until the chain gets hooked around a rock, then move back up to your crane and press Up to trigger a cutscene.
- You'll land on Domino's submarine. Pull out your scythe and use it on the eye on the submarine behind you, not Domino. This ends Year 3.
- YouTube: Grim Fandango: ... End of year 3. (Time: 3:38)
Featured Video
Year 4
Run down the huge steps.
Open the coffin at the bottom to see an old "friend".
Run back upstairs for a cutscene.
Start leaving back downstairs, and the Aztec gatekeeper will give you a note. Read it.
Now go down one set of stairs but cut right instead of down the big set of stairs. You should find Glottis.
Talk to Glottis until he draws a picture on the wall.
Go down the stairs and into the doorway to find a kitchen.
Open the right set of drawers in there and use them again to get a rag.
Leave the kitchen and use the rag on the red cans of oil.
Pull out your mug and put it on the golden rack in the kitchen, then put your oily rag in the toaster, a dark shiny object just left of the rack.
That should trigger a cutscene as the mug goes flying.
Rubacava
You'll see that the Bonewagon is booby-trapped. Walk down towards the scrimshaw (tattoo) parlor.
The owner is asleep. Open a cabinet on the right wall and you'll pull out a small bottle. Exit the parlor.
Go out to the crossroads and go right to find the Captain.
Take his ship in a bottle after he leaves.
Now go into the Blue Casket. Move straight on into the kitchen.
Pull out the ship in a bottle and use it on the barrel of gelatin.
As you come back out, the owner will talk to you.
After that, run back to Glottis. Give him the ship in a bottle. He drinks it and gets hooked, running off.
He returns and has stomach problems. Talk to him. He throws up all over the garage.
Use the small bottle on the garage area then walk to the back of the Bonewagon and use the explosives.
El Marrow
Use the trash can to get the agent's photo, then use his body to take his arm.
Take out your note from Hector and the agent's photo and hand it to the carrier pigeon. A cutscene plays.
Talk to Meche and she'll leave.
Follow her out of the room then move towards the camera to find Glottis. You'll take a remote control from him.
Go up the ladder and continue up the next one, as you're currently unable to go in the casino.
Take the coffee pot on the tray in the front of the screen, and give some to the actors here in the odd costumes.
Use the hard-to-see ladder behind them to go up to the next level.
Use your coffee on the right side of this upper level to pour coffee on the actors below.
Climb back down and put the coffee pot back where it was (you can't pocket it).
Go into the bright doorway on the right to get made up like the actors were. You can now enter the casino, but don't just yet.
Go back up the ladder and use the agent's arm on the grinder with the snow flakes on it, then pick it back up.
Go back down to where Glottis is, then go out the upper-right corner of that area.
There is a dark tunnel leading off to the right. Use your grinder in that dark area until a cutscene plays. You are using it in the right spot if the snow on the ground becomes green.
A giant crocodile is coming for you, while you're in the Bonewagon. Move forward until you can't go any further, then pull out your remote control (this happens automatically when you press I) and put the Bonewagon in the up position.
Put the remote control away (again, automatic with I) and press enter to get out onto a nearby catwalk.
Run forward to the ladder at the other end of the ledge. Go down it just a bit so that the crocodile will turn around, then go back up.
Pull out your remote and lower the Bonewagon, crushing the crocodile's tail. Now you can safely move right to the florist's shop.
Pull out your scythe and use it on the ball above the florist's door to cut it open, revealing a bell.
Go back in the shop one more time and you'll get a Sproutella.
Go to the casino. Meche is accompanying the counterfeiter. Talk to her twice (she doesn't recognize you the first time) and you'll cover the counterfeiter with a sheet with Enter.
Talk to the trenchcoated agent enough times and he'll crack the counterfeiter's machine. He'll change into a toga in the bathroom.
Go into the bathroom to change into his clothes.
Go talk to what looks like the old mail demon who is guarding the elevator. He will ask you any of a number of questions, but the answer will always be the number that last appeared on the board behind your head. Getting it right will take you up to Hector's office.
Talk to Celso in this hallway. Go through the options until you get the option "I've just had the worst vacation I've ever had!" and select that.
Walk forward just a bit and Hector will talk to you and start a cutscene.
Run to the right just a bit and you'll wind up on the roof. Go up on the ledge closest to the camera and use your grinder on the structural support connected to the giant sign near the bottom of the screen.
You'll lose the grinder, but then you pour the Sproutella ammo into that same support.
Just use the ladder now, and you'll advance to the next area, the Mausoleum.
Mausoleum
Walk up to the mausoleum (it looks like a greenhouse). A cutscene plays.
Use your small bottle to freeze the flower on your chest.
Run towards the car and talk to Salvador in the back.
Open the briefcase in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Pick up Salvador's ticket and keep it out.
Run up to the mausoleum and go behind it, and Salvador's ticket will begin to be attracted to a specific area, his body.
Just walk around until you find his body, then press Enter near it to get the key to the car trunk.
Use the key on the car trunk to find ammo for your Sproutella.
Go over and shoot the water tank at the bottom left part of the hill to finish Hector.
Enter the mausoleum and the game is over.
