The 1975 documentary Grey Gardens follows two women in East Hampton, New York. Big Edie and Little Edie were socialites at the turn of the century. Their lives fell into disarray after they moved into their mansion named Grey Gardens. The film documents their lives and the disheveled state of the mansion in Big Edie's twilight years. In 1977, Big Eddie passed away, and Little Edie sold the estate.
The success of the documentary spurred a musical that ultimately found success on Broadway and a television movie commissioned by HBO. The movie won an Emmy Award in 2009 for Best Television Movie. Jessica Lange also took home the Emmy for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Movie.
