Gretchen Wyler was an American actress, dancer, singer and animal rights activist.
Career
Gretchen Wyler made her debut with the St. Louis Municipal Opera in 1950 as a ballet dancer. She performed on Broadway for five decades in shows such as Guys and Dolls, Silk Stockings, Damn Yankees, Rumple, Bye Bye Birdie and Sly Fox. Her TV debut on The Colgate Comedy Hour in 1956 led to frequent television appearances that included roles on Somerset, On our Own, Dallas, Santa Barbara, MacGyver, Judging Amy, Providence and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Wyler's film career included performances in films such as Private Benjamin and The Marrying Man.
Animal Rights
Wyler began her campaign for animal-rights issues in 1966 after observing poor conditions at a dog pound in Warwick, New York. She opened a new Warwick Animal Shelter in 1968 and managed it for 10 years, while she was still active in the movie industry. In 1991, Wyler founded the Ark Trust, which later merged with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Wyler retired as a vice president of HSUS in 2006.
