The Grendel action figure is part of a complete set of action figures based on the 2007 film Beowulf, adapted from the ancient Old English epic poem. The figure's design depicts the story's antagonist, the tormented monster Grendel, and is faithful to character as depicted in the film.
Background
While Grendel is depicted as a monster in the centuries-old poem upon which the film is based, this 2007 Grendel is more humanoid in appearance than readers might imagine. This is due, in part, to the method in which the film was made: using motion-capture CGI animation that follows the movements and facial expressions of live actors. In the film, Grendel is played by Crispin Glover, and the designers incorporated elements of Glover's physicality into the design, including his hairstyle. Otherwise, the design resembles a skinless human figure with remnants of golden epidermis over exposed muscles and tendons.
