On June 11, 2009, MTV Games Harmonix Music Systems announced a new partnership with Warner Brothers Records and Green Day to bring Green Day's extensive portfolio of Grammy Award winning music to the Rock Band gaming franchise. The game will be available in 2010 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and the Wii system from Nintendo. The latest release to the Rock Band series follows the well received release of The Beatles Rock Band, that did very well in its release in November 2009.

The new Green Day Rock Band game will chronicle the career of Green Day and work as an extension of some of their most-defining albums and moments throughout their career to date. Titles from their latest album, 21st Century Breakdown, will also be included in the release. The gameplay for Green Day Rock Band is expected to follow in line with the previous Rock Band releases. You are able to select vocals, guitar, bass, or drums to play along with the songs. You can play solo or with up to 6 players - guitar, bass, drums, and up to 3 vocalists. In the Rock Band series, there are two main games - Rock Band and Rock Band 2. With the release of Green Day: Rock Band, there will now be two Band games. Green Day joins The Beatles as the only two bands garnering their own edition of the game.
