The Green Bay Packers are a professional National Football League team that plays in the North Division of the NFC.
The team was founded by Curly Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun on August 11, 1919. The following season they were accepted into the Amercian Professional Football Association, which later became the National Football League.
Vince Lombardi was hired to coach the team in 1959. He turned the team around, moving them out of last place and into champions in 1961, 1962, and 1965. Following the 1966 NFL-AFL merger, the Packers won Super Bowl I in 1967 and Super Bowl II in 1968. Starting in 1968, Lombardi spent one year as the team's general manager, before leaving to coach the Washington Redskins in 1969.
In 1992, quarterback Brett Favre was traded to the Packers from the Atlanta Falcons. After missing the playoffs for the previous 10 years, Favre led the team to the divisional playoffs in 1993, where they lost to the Dallas Cowboys.
The Packers made the post season the next five years, including a 1996 NFL Championship in Super Bowl XXXI. Also in 1996, Favre was voted the NFL most valuable player.
After 16 seasons with the Packers, Favre was traded to the New York Jets after an initial period of retirement.
